I bought the token, then removed it from my account. You still get the space without the annoyance of having to use the stupid thing every time you log on. Myself however, I think it was stupid to begin with, if you want extra protection, then it should be for extra protection, if you want extra inventory, it should be in game already, no reason to make it like they did, it felt like I was being ripped off because the only thing I wanted was the inventory space, which I shouldn't have to pay real money for. Its even worse than the gimmicky add-ons for games where you get extra outfits or something, because this is actually very helpful rather than just cosmetic.

Not to jump on the dogpile/detrail here.. But Norton is pretty bloated and ineffective as far as anti-virus go...

Please note that the "bigger" names in antivirus are actually targets for virus writers as well.

There's several antivirus that offer better protection, either for free, or much more efficiently.

My personal vote is for Eset, more commonly known as "NOD-32". It's footprint is exceptionally small, both on your HDD and in memory, the heuristics are best in class, nothing tops its 'zero-day' detection, on that it updates on a push system, if there's something new discovered, it's automatically updated that second.

As well it's got the rare rebuilding of the product when they add features. What I mean by that, is that everything is done in house and added to the core of the program to run more efficiently. For instance, say when Norton decides it wants to add better a firewall, it usually buys a company that does good firewalls, then shoehorns in the product of said company on top of the software suite; where Eset integrates those features completely at the core.

I can't stress it enough, Eset has practically no overhead when operating, but it does cost a decent amount...

Also worth noting, the Microsoft Security Essentials that you can get for free, you have to download it thanks to anti-competition laws, gets really high marks as well, and it gets integrated into the core of your system. My only gripe is the quirky 'debugging' you end up having to do on a fresh install.

All that is neither here nor there...

Buy the damn token for fucks sake...

I like MSE, but I had severe issues with it and FFXI. It was scanning every .dat file that FFXI was using, and made the game nearly unplayabble. NPCs and interior rooms would take minutes to load. It was necessary for me to add the POL folder to the excluded files and folders list.

There's a reason for why Norton's security program has gained the nickname "Norton Virus" among the IT community.

As for the security token and mog satchel - it's pretty clear when they released the security token SE was dealing with a significant issue regarding account hackings, and determined the best course of action was to induce mass adoption of security tokens among the FFXI community. They found the best way to do this was to give a significant incentive - in this case, the Mog Satchel - while making the cost to purchase small enough to encourage the impulse buy.

I doubt SE is going to remove this pro-security token incentive.

I thought you couldn't buy the token at all at the present? That's how I understood the OP. I'd also love to get the satchel without this thing, nothing you buy outside of the game should be related to in-game benefits, especially huge ones like these. My mule could really use the extra inventory by now.

The problem with that idea is that if you want the inventory, you can call up and remove your token as soon as you put it on, and you keep the Mog Satchel. This is what I did because I find the token more of an annoyance than a helpful security measure. I myself neither have something worth being hacked to obtain, nor do I act so badly that someone would wish to hack me, so its not really useful to me in any way.

Honestly an extra security measure should be sold as an extra security measure, not as something you buy for something in game. Besides, isn't one of the complained about things in the game a shortage of inventory space? Removing the need for a token would kill the complaint from some people for a week or so I would think.

Its that kind of idea that allows all kinds of companies to charge extra money for content that could, or should, already be in a game, a cause of many complains in the gaming industry itself in recent years.

I agree with this except I am ok with things being like this that are simply cosmetic, such as the wands that allow you to become a Mandragora, those are ok, but things like inventory space, which improve gameplay and expand the game for you, no.

I think I understand the issue here. Originally you would purchase the Security Token through the PlayOnline viewer, yes? That is no longer available, but there is a new method now.

The new method for purchasing a security token is not immediately obvious, it takes a bit of poking around to find it.
    What you do is:
    A) Log in at https://secure.square-enix.com/account
A1) Select "One-Time Password" under 'Services and Options' on the left side of the screen. (You may need to scroll down to see it.)
    B) You should now be at the URL https://secure.square-enix.com/account/app/svc/accSvc. Here you will see a link to read about one-time passwords and two options: "Security Token Usage Settings" and "Purchase a Square Enix Security Token".
B1) Select "Purchase a Square Enix Security Token" and click 'Next'.
B2) Now, read through and accept the Security Token Terms of Use agreement (or scroll to the bottom of it if you can't be bothered to know what you're agreeing to), check the 'I accept' box, and click 'Next'.
    C) You're now looking at a screen that will say the price of the Security Token and ask you to select your country.
C1) After you select your country, input your shipping information. You should probably double-check and make sure you didn't mis-select your country. Then click 'Confirm Entered Data'.
C2) Look over your information. There's a grey 'Edit' button you'll want to use if anything's even slightly off. If it all checks out, click 'Next'.
    D) PAYMENT! This is where things get annoying. You have two payment options: Click-and-Buy, or Crysta. If you choose the wrong one by mistake, go back to step A1.
D1) If you purchase it with Crysta, it's 999 Crysta. If you don't have enough, you're going to have to go buy some Crysta and then go back to step A1.

Alright I can't give step-by-step beyond that point as I'm not buying an actual Security Token or Crysta right now and I'm not touching ClickandBuy. But if you get to this step it's just a matter of giving SE your money and you should be set, aside from waiting for the damn thing to arrive through the mail.

    =====

Once you receive your Security Token, go back to the account management login, and select "One Time Password" again. This time, select "Security Token Usage Settings" instead of "Purchase a Square Enix Security Token", then select "Security Token Registration". Agree to the terms of use again. Punch in your security token's Serial Number (the webpage shows where to find that) and punch in your security token's current one-time password and quickly hit Next before it changes.

(Again, can't give directions past this point, but it should be easy enough.)

Of course you will then need to edit your PlayOnline login to include the One-Time Password setting. Log in and *BAM!* instant extra storage.

    =====

After you confirm you have your storage you can remove the security token... but if you do and your account gets hacked, you have only yourself to blame, no yelling at SE because you removed the security token your own damn self.

Of course, using the security token is a constant-though-minor hassle, so it's up to you to decide where you stand on the security-versus-convenience spectrum[/SIZE].

As a matter of principle, I agree with you that nothing purchased outside of the game should provide meaningful (non-cosmetic) in-game benefits. However, while I disagree with SE's decision to make a form of item storage available only through purchase of a security token, I understand why they made the decision they did - and I can see that their decision is not unreasonable, especially considering SE may not hold the same principles that I do.

ALso... only your mule needs the extra inventory? Do you have a security token on your main character that is not applying to your mule, or simply don't need the space on your main character?

    Very informative post.

It irks me that you get the space after buying , and can retain the space after deactivating the token. Shoot make it cost 5 mil gil, but should be available to players with small pockets..... 5mil will keep em playing, AND help with the rampant inflation going on.
