It was recently stated that "PS2 Limitations" were the reason for not expanding this very useful tool (which has also helped me meet some wonderful people in countries such as Japan that I could not otherwise communicate with). So I looked through the auto-translator a bit and came up with a minor solution to the problem (although it's only temporary).
There are semi-repeats in the auto-translator that maybe could be simplified. For example "Can you speak..." has the question being asked about Japanese, English, German, and French. However, English, German and French are all their own words in the translator as well. Could you not replace each of the separate questions with 1 - "What language do you speak?"
Then there's the various Dynamis zones. We all know, for example, that Dynamis - Bastok is in Bastok Mines. So instead of having a separate translation for each Dynamis, why not make "Dynamis" as 1 translated word and then we can use the individual zone names with it to make the point to whomever about the zone we are talking about. So instead of "<Dynamis - Valkurm>", we would have to put "<Dynamis> <Valkurm Dunes>". This should free up 9 slots by itself which would then allow you to add "<Abyssea>" to the Auto-Translator.
Then, of course, we have the Shadowreign Era zones. So we have, in the auto-translator, <Batallia Downs> and <Batallia Downs [S]>. Is there any way to create a translation for "[S]" and then we put in "<Batallia Downs> <[S]>" into the auto-translate to get our point across? That should free up even more and would then also cover the zones in the past that aren't even in the Auto-Translator. For Grauberg, Vunkerl Inlet, and Fort Karugo-Narugo, just add them as their own terms since we need to be able to say "<Abyssea> <Vunkerl Inlet>" anyway.
I'll do 1 more that I found (and there might be more) that can be simplified possibly as a space saver. Windurst, Bastok, Jeuno, etc. are all in the auto-translator already, so why do we need a separate auto-translation for "Windurst Residential Area", "Bastok Residential Area", etc.? Why not just make "Residential Area" 1 auto-translation and let the cities be used for the 2nd part?
I understand the game was designed with the PS2 in mind and while some believe it is holding things back, I think to just outright end support of it would lose you many fans. So I wanted to try and help with perhaps easing the idea of PS2 limitations. I know that while it is true, systems have limitations in programming, there are typically ways to get around them. For example, in high school I took a class for programming in the BASIC Language. We had to come up with a program that would list the first 25 prime numbers. Well, for bonus points, we needed to figure out a program to display the first 100 or more. The PCs at the time could not normally display numbers beyond a specific number of digits, so I had to use a programming trick in order to force the numbers to display properly (converting an integer into a string instead is how I believe I had to do it). Now I'm almost sure it's not as simple with programming today, but I would assume the same principle idea may apply and hope you would continue to show creativity in coming up with ways for us to continue to enjoy this awesome game on whatever system we so choose.
