I like this idea because I had had the same problem with running into random trees that happen to jump out in front of me. Even when I know I should hit anything, I still do...
Or if that isn't an option maybe the ability of seeing your red dot move (instead of staying at the point you were at when you opened it) while /map is open will be helpful in preventing from running into things and to far past a point. And making the maps a bit more detailed, because there have been times when I ran into a cliff wall that wasn't represented in the map.
Easiest way to see this in action is stand at, say, right outside the mog house area right when it opens to the outside, line yourself up to the exit to Saur, then try auto-running straight to the exit. You might wind up down in the AH area or snagged against the Airship exit to Windy.

If you have crap cluttering up your screen then you obviously have a craptacular computer, i have so much space on my screen with the resolution i use, it saddens me that there is barely anything on it. No possible way that a detailed mini version of the map that streams your position would take up anymore room than the already piece of crap mini see through compass with transparent blue or purple lines and red dots for enemies. <------- this is where u put it, replace that dum see through compass garbage
