World of Warcraft gets away with capes etc cause it's more cartoon styled but ffxi has its own design and is a lot more realistic. I know from doing a 1 year animation course that it would take a VERY long time to get 1 cape to move realistically, let alone for varying shapes and sizes. There are a lot of capes in FF, and all have different designs in the item image so the work to make that happen would take years, and yea I think most people would toggle them off anyway, I definitely would, not really fond of capes at all!
There aren't exactly real-time cloth physics in this game. You would probably need to add cape animations to every single animation in the game to avoid extreme clipping.
It's simply a ton of work required to make it look anywhere near decent.
Yeah, as much as I would love capes, I'm only behind it if they were willing to do it correctly.
And I doubt they would, even if they had a ton of extra manpower.
However, adding chest pieces in the future that have small-medium sized capes attached as part of it would be kinda cool, IMO. They would run into way less programming problems that way I think.
All of the required hours to get capes to animate right would be completely wasted by people like me who would wear only the most glaringly bright colors specifically to bother everyone in the vicinity.
shame we cant get away with capes in RL..
