I don't get it..

I tried about four times to solo the ghoul usually ended up with my dying but managed to get away a few times. Hundred fists, with the shell, protect and regen activated from the book. Had a few potions as well but the ice spikes which caused paralysis and then slow just kind of made it hard :/

You could have easily joined an experience points party in gusgen mines and got the skull that way or just continue to keep leveling until you were high enough to get the skull. A level 30 can solo it easy.

Yeah I was gearing up to solo/grind to 30, also as for the mines if I recall they are in clumps aren't they? I had no way of pulling save for attacking and then running to a safe spot. Those few seconds of being hit while trying to maneuver myself back are kind of crucial especially when it does a spell that will siphon/attack at least 1/5th of my health. :/. As for the party didn't know there were some there to be honest. I've seen so many level 99s that I thought that I was pretty much the only one without a subjob and below level 50..

As for what has changed? I think people generally spend quite a bit less time at the old areas like that, or they are doing Voidwatch. That, or the so-called book-burns. Lots of things can also be done solo, duo, or trio and such, so people might tend to play in smaller groups a lot more.

I, for one, tend to help with anything I can unless I am actively doing something already at the time of need, or if it's something that doesn't take the whole day while I have something planned. ^^;
