    Play-Online Viewer Problem

Everytime I log in with my main toon, I get this error message about 10 seconds into the game.

"The instruction at 0x606da329 referenced memory at 0x02ab02ae. The memory could not be written. Click OK to terminate program."

What can I do to fix this? I am unable to play.

    Thanks in advance.

Just uninstalled my old version of FFXI so I can use the Abyssea expansion I bought as the new Ultimate Edition from Steam. Download went Ok, but took me a bit remember to find my old password so I had to wait to finish log-in because it took more than three tries. Woke up this morning to log-in and now POL is popping up with an "Error Code POL-5312" which a friend list communication error. No big deal to me I pretty much never use it, right? I keep on rolling, get to the black screen when it swaps to the windowed FFXI, and suddenly "POL has stopped working correctly. Windows is searching for a solution."

Checked the version and files with the in-POL tool. Nothing there. Checked the firewall and POL and FFXI Ultimate Abyssea Edition both have access to the internet.

Often this is caused because of a driver not working properly (accessing a memory space already reserved for something else), or faulty memory chips. It's rare, but could also be tied into the memory controller (this is usually fixed via a BIOS update). Sometimes the problem is actually configuration/heat related--ram timings may be too tight and it only mucks up when things heat up a bit (BIOS settings, usually tied into the overclocking/manual CPU/RAM settings).

If you are able to burn a CD, you can download the ISO to make a bootable CD that runs memtest86 to test your memory chips to see if something fails....let it run for a few hours (maybe even overnight, depending on the speed that it runs) to be sure it makes a couple full passes. If it finds an error in a module, then you'll want to pull some sticks and retest them until you find the bad card and get it replaced. For the retesting, you can usually just run the individual tests that failed instead of running the full pass to save some time. If it's tripping a lot of errors, or jsut outright hangs....then your BIOS settings may be too aggressive for either/or RAM and CPU timings.

the 5312 error is most likely exactly what it said..."communication error". This could either be between the client and server (you and SE), or internal to the SE servers. When you did the uninstall, did you remove all traces of FFXI from the registry and such? It's possible you may have some pointers to outdated files that are causing an issue if you did not do a full cleanup after the uninstall.

Otherwise, could simply be local security blocking background communication. Check the logs for your security sfotware/devices, maybe bypass a router if in use and connect directly to the ISP's modem to see if port forwarding or DMZ is needed. If all that passes, then either you or your ISP needs to trace the routing to SE to find the failing segment to get someone working on restoring/bypassing the downed segment.

As for POL stopped working....that can be a number of things. Drivers (Graphics, sound, network, mouse--ANY driver) not behaving properly with FFXI (or in general), something causing the GPU to reset (overheating, driver issues, voltage issues, etc), memory access errors (bad driver, bad memory, bad clock/voltage settings in the BIOS), various issues with the CPU config (overheating, voltage/clock settings issues).....the list can go on and on. POL is known to just flake out sometimes on a lot of systems, so it's hard to patently say "this is causing the crash".

I'd focus on the communications errors first, then go forward from there. Who knows... loosing the communication could be causing an internal exception for POL itself, and nothing is actually wrong with your system. You do know for certain something weird is going on with the netwrok communications, fix the known unknowns first.

All of this got started when I restarted Ironwang here and ported him over as part of the World Transfer process. I never had a single issue with logging in, internal communication...you name it, for several years until I did the World Transfer. Since then I've had a rolling series of log-in timeouts with "This character is already logged in. Please try again in a few minutes." (for hours), a couple of timeouts during zone changes, and this new slew of communication errors. Logging in with my main Mystara has only had issues once.

Not sure what could have happened there, but it's very disappointing to go from "Running like a Rolex" to "Running like a Pakistani knockoff of a Chinese knockoff watch" just because I restarted my first character when I started FFXI to have a Mule for my main...

As for the tech support, I'm pretty well lost there. I'm not a network wonk of any stripe and I'm smart enough to recognize when I'm out of my league. I also know barely enough to not go rooting around in my registry without knowing what i'm doing, and leave such things to CCCleaner.

The issue isn't me, my router, or my system. Everything else on my network and system was, and still is, running tip-top and without issue. The issue is that I bought a product, the earlier version of said product (which had all of the updates automatically installed from the new product and simply lacked in keys for unlocking certain functions) I had ran great until I asked SE to do what I thought was a basic function of transferring an old character to another server, and it's been a complete Goat Rope since. I don't want to call my ISP to trace where the issue is. I don't want to go through my registry to find some nit-noy potential issue that not affecting a single other operation on my system. I want the product that I have put my time and money into to freakin' work like it did before.

OK, now that I'm done whining...

Fired up the POLconfig tool, it's flagged for access through the firewall, and I got nothing. Not one of the connections it attempts went through. That said, whenever I fire up POL it seems to connect fine. There is network activity there throughout the process until I try to fire up FFXI to get the latest version and it nosedives suddenly. Downloaded my latest video and network drivers, double-checked I'm rocking DirectX 11, ran CCCleaner...and I'm at a loss as to what to do next, honestly.

There are known issues with re-installing FFXI, sometimes it's registry issues, othertimes it's versioning conflicts with files left on the hard drive. This can happen not only when moving from SE's installation to Steam's installation, but also when reinstalling the steam version--would imagine it holds true as well if re-installing an SE install. Can probably find a detailed how-to in the support site's knowledgebase.

Just ran a quick google search and got a hit right away on reinstalling the steam version:

    KB Article: 58228
    KB Category: [Technical Support]
KB Sub-category: [Known Issues] [Update / Patch] [ Installation] [Download] [Crash / Freeze]

I just reinstalled the Steam version of FINAL FANTASY XI and receive "Error code: POL-5312".

This error message is a result of the Steam version of FINAL FANTASY XI not being uninstalled correctly. The “ffxi” directory is not uninstalled when you select “Delete Local Content” from Steam. This is prohibiting the PlayOnline Viewer and FINAL FANTASY XI from updating if you reinstall the PlayOnline Viewer and FINAL FANTASY XI through Steam. This issue affects all Windows platforms.

To resolve the issue, please follow these steps:
    1. Before reinstalling PlayOnline Viewer and FINAL FANTASY XI from Steam go to:
    a. C:> Program Files (x86) > Steam > steamapps > common
    2. Delete the “ffxi” directory
    3. Start Steam
    4. Reinstall the PlayOnline Viewer and FINAL FANTASY XI
At the very least, I'd look into their FAQ's at the support portal, or try to contact support either via e-mail or chat through the portal.

Ahh...what threw me off was the "Friends list" specificity of the original error message. If it had given me a general "We ain't got nothin'!" message I would have dug deeper in the FAQ. Thanks so much for your help!
