    Ccg

Whoever unleashed this bot on the Gamer Escape wiki should be flogged. I'm getting real tired of having to go into the history of every article and open the last version from before Ccg got to it to find information as fundamental as where a particular item can be obtained.

It seems like S-E's "abandon in place" philosophy is spreading to to the Community Sites.

GamerEscape's wiki is being overhauled with smarter data management, but there is a lot of data and not everything is able to be filled in with a bot. For those pages, the data is still there but in hidden fields, which you can see when editing the page. It's a very big project, but only a handfull of people are working on it.

It beats BGwiki on cross-linking data.

Is there a reason this is posted here and not the forums of GamerEscape?

I'm trying to use the GE wiki (and commenting on it on an S-E forum) because it is prominently listed as a "Premier Community Site," which S-E expects us all to flock to in order to find answers to deliberately obfuscated questions like "What does a cheese sandwich do?" (Gotta make sure Bradygames is able to sell those books, after all!). Of course, apparently "premier" simply means "doesn't link to a 404." Now, for a certain other MMO, the publisher has made (for example) every single recipe available online directly (searchable by name, craft, and skill level no less!), but that would make too much sense for FFXI. Instead, S-E deliberately hides information from players, making it available only in the most inefficient ways possible, and then wonders loudly to themselves why the players don't even bother with that content. Those players who do try to find this information out from legitimate, "premier" sources are then left with the task of searching multiple sources simultaneously, as none are complete and all are incomplete in their own, incompatible ways.

And even on those "premier" websites, information is only made available and maintained on content that is actually popular, creating a feedback loop.

And since this is my own thread and I can "hijack" it in any way I please, I'd like to point out that the problem with crafting isn't that we need a chocobo shirt, but that there is no access to critical information on crafting from first-party (let alone in-game) sources. Meanwhile, linking auction houses across Vana'diel but ensuring that guild salesrooms are as segregated as much possible does absolutely nothing to increase access to the low-level (read "low-value") crafting materials needed to get started in crating to begin with. If I get a rabbit hide in Sarutabaruta, I could waste an auction slot on trying to sell it to another player, go through the time and effort necessary to get to the opposite corner of the Middle Lands to sell it to a relevant guild for less than 100 gil, or I could just sell it to an NPC (or drop it outright, because really) and remove that material out of the player economy just as quickly as it was introduced.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have jobs I need to book/Aby burn to 99, because S-E and their precious community do everything in their power to make sure that player content available before 99 isn't worth my time.

BG is by far the best for numerical and statistical data, but other information sources are often better for article-style written information because the data is the first priority of BG (which caters more to the elite) while more general information is a higher priority at other sites (caters more to the average player)

And even on those "premier" websites, information is only made available and maintained on content that is actually popular, creating a feedback loop.
This is mostly because editing a wiki is seen as a daunting task and most people who visit one are afraid to edit because they don't want to screw it up, thus leaving a massive undertaking to be done by just a few people.

Wait. You're complaining about fan-generated content on the official site as if it's S-E's problem to fix.

    ...What?

Wait, you think that the reason people don't bother with stuff is because it's hard to get NEWBIE gear on? And yes, S-E deliberately made the end game the only game- because they thought the game was about to be abandoned en masse in favor of new players piling into FFXIV, leaving only veterans behind.

No, the reason there's no support for it is because until level gain hits a point where people actually start needing it (read: Around 75 and Dynamis), most gear is virtually useless to get anymore.

You don't need armor when it's 18 people beating on an Easy Prey monster for the optimum exp gaining methods, or someone twoboxing for 16 other people AFKing while spamming Fell Cleave or randomly gimp-fighting worms in Abyssea- then again, it wouldn't matter if they were active because they're going through 50 levels of their PT fighting what's IT++ to them, because they walked in at 30th.

Without those being fixed, the community doesn't really give a flying fig about crafting low-level gear, supplies for same, or anything much else other than "watch the next level-up animation until I can get my cheap-o L78 gear and start farming Dynamis". I watch new players on the linkshell I'm on get to 70 and wonder why it's so hard to beat this Maat guy with no gear, no skills, and no frickin money because all they did was Gusgen -> Crawler's -> Oubliette in flail-and-fail mode.

And all it'd take is two things to fix.

One: Abyssea gets the same level limits as Dynamis had. 75+.
Two: Book pages don't work in alliances. Abyssea exp bonus effects don't work in alliances. Voila, you're back to a 6-man system again that actually requires some effort and gear to be effective, but with book/Aby exp bonuses for those the journey is no longer a painful, hideous grind that makes you wish you'd never heard the word "colibri" again.

IMHO, until that happens, information (and efforts to generate) on lower-level stuff will be poor at best. People tend to wikis that have relevant information. Anything pre-50 at this point is barely relevant and hence barely given any effort.
