Well for starters the characters were horrible. Vahn was....i'll be nice, let's just say not to my tastes and unless you were a teenage girl i really don't see how you could play as him with a straight face. The plot was retarded, least as much of it was i was able to withstand, with the evil empire and the retarded evil twin surprise. The game play was boring and bland, very repetitive with a clunky gambit system which annoyed me more than anything else. To be honest i don't remember liking anything about the game...the script was awful. It was almost like a bad star wars rip off. I coudn't tell if the game was a comedy or if it was actually trying to be serious.

The worst thing about the game though was it was just boring.

Many didn't like the many hints at Star Wars you can find in FFXII, the cast is pretty much the same.

A boy left without a family (Vaan/Luke) helps a princess (Ashe/Leila) to fight against an Empire (Archadia/The Empire), with the aid of a sky pirate (Balthier/Ian Solo) with a humanoid fellow (Fran/Chewbakka). During their adventures they battle against a powerful elite of warriors (Judges/Sith) and a member of the Empire is related to a character of the group (Cid/Darth Vader). Along with many details of the areas you explore having similarities with Star Wars places.

FF8 wasn't really any different, every battle was either GF spam, or if you knew how, limit break abuse. Characters fit common anime tropes and cliches, and there were so many unaddressed plotholes that were never fully explored, etc (I.E. Squalls wound after disc 1?)

It just seemed like a return to all the great fun the games used to have. I'm not saying I didn't like other FF games, even though there were a few I HATED, but just that there were so many things about FF9 I liked more.

The first FF I ever played was Final Fantasy on the NES, then I played FFIII (NES) (Which I know is actually 6...) FF6 Is my favorite still today and I've played all of them now, including the tactics series which I loved, and Mystic Quest.

Oh I disagree with you on every single level possible. Final Fantasy's 8 plot was so much more inventive and unique than FF 12 it's almost a blasphemy to suggest otherwise.

8 was about a group of orphans suffering from post-traumatic amnesia who trained as seeds (mercanaries) in flying schools called gardens battling an evil Sorceress from another deminsion. They don't get much more original than that lol

The game had so many plot twists it was amazing. Now it's been awhile since I played, so not sure how specific i can get with you - but I do believe Squall's injuries from disc one were from Sifer, who was basically like the school bad-ass in an long overcoat who liked fighting with Squall. Sliced him across the face with his gunblade -which to this day is one of the most awesome cinemas of all time.

I'll admit to you the boss fights were too simple, but otherwise i thought the fighting was excellent. Far more challenging than other FF games. As far as anime cliches, i woudn't know - i don't watch the stuff.

    -Cliche brooding male protagonist, check
    -Spunky ditz, check
    -White mage girl, check
    -Chivalrous pervert, check
-Dumb tough guy with a soft side, check

Edea being married to Cid, the orphanage where EVERYONE magically and conveniently knew each other, fake presidents, they were all forced or way too convenient to be occuring. Then there are plot holes amuck, what happened to Rinoa's feelings/love for Seifer, what happened to Squalls wound at the start of disc 2 (he was impaled by a gigantic icicle, remember?) why does Seifer join Edea, even if he had a good side to him. In Dollet, and during the seed testing, he put his differences aside to fight with the group, now all of a sudden he's bad? So much of it made no sense.

The battle system was a joke! You sit there for hours on end drawing magic, summon GF, fights over. And what kind of an RPG discourages leveling? Remember back in FFI where if you didn't over level, you would have your butt handed to you on a silver platter? That added to the experience, the training regime for the next big boss, the endurance run through the dungeon, etc. FF8 was not a bad game, but still a severely flawed one.

8 is the only Final Fantasy I could never finish, outside of 11, which I just started recently.

I remember liking it, although finding some of the plot twists a bit banal (HEY GUYZ WE ALL WENT TO THE SAME ORPHANAGE AND THEN FORGOT LAWLS), and I found Squall to be an unlikable idiot.

On the other hand, I found Laguna to be a very likable idiot.

My favorite has got to be 10. The world may be linear, but it's extremely well designed artistically, and varied while remaining coherent. The music is fantastic, the story, while simple, is executed well (And has some very nice hidden depths if you look for them), and the battle system is tight and fast.

Complaints include the characters being somewhat bland (ohai kimahri), the sometimes poor voice acting (Everyone mentions the laughing scene but that is INTENTIONALLY poor, I'm more thinking of Yuna's voice actress matching her lines to Japanese mouth movements), the linearity of the game, and it's hilariously low difficulty. Also, the ending, which was drawn out far too long after the emotional climax of the game (Tidus and Jehct).

And then X-2 came along and proved that no matter how fun your gameplay is, if it's wrapped up in obtaining outfits for girls as they go around doing girly things for girly reasons, teenage boys (SE's supposed main market) are gonna trash your game. I didn't have that much of a problem with it, because it was fun and it didn't take itself seriously, but man did I get flack from my friends...
