    far as I remember FFII has characters leveling up too. that is still a way of gaining points, even if the name changes.

    No, there were no experience points, or levels. Skills for weapons and magic needed to be leveled up, but that's it. Skilling up weapons/magic had no effect on your stats, which had a random chance of increasing depending on what happened in a fight.
