Can you explain this pup's rise to godhood?

Also, can someone explain maneuvers to me? Is your automaton a lose cannon? Boosting it's main stats by using maneuvers? Or is there a way to control it so that you know exactly what it's going to use/do? I played PUP before and my automaton always seemed to have a mind of it's own.

Ofcourse, SE is still trying to sneak in the occasional end-game mage gear with no relevant stats for PUP, but I guess that's barance for you.
