If you are on xbox, you have to relog every time you are done killing one mob. For example: have it popped, kill it, grab the loot, log the FFXI screen where you get to select your character, select it and back to the game. Do it every single time. For cities you may be able to go 2 battles without freezing. Usually there is a good 5 mnts timer before the planar rift repop unless people took all their rewards and someone repop the planar rift, in which case you are out of luck.

But I do agree with you, they should place planar rift in areas where they completely get rid of mobs roaming in surrounding areas. It's the smart thing to do - then again we are talking with the SE team currently lead by the unmentionable Mr T who crashed and burn another flagship game so bad that he has to be publicly shamed by writing an apology.
