Ochain is the best melee defence shield, Aegis is the best magic defence shield. If you're serious about pld make both but keep in mind that there is nothing in the game that needs a pld anyway right now.

You can make both shields within 3-4 months, I don't see any point about whining about one being better than the other in certain situations.
