??? I have surround sound on my system (Asus Xonar DX)--hear spells cast to the side and behind me and what not. Maybe you're not picking up on it because of your sound card's codec and/or settings?

See that's the thing, I can hear spells/agro/noise left and right when I have headset on and when I have speakers on.
But when I have speakers on the back speakers don't pick up any sounds, when I put a movie on or Skyrim etc I have full 5.1. My sound card is up-to-date drivers etc, it all works aside from when FFXI is on.

sounds like it may be turning off the EAX extensions or something. Or maybe for some reason the speaker mode is getting changed away from 5.1 to 2 channel--could be that it is defaulting to gaming mode or something like that. My audio center was various modes, music, game, theater... forget them all, has like 5 icons in a cluster--usually it's in GX mode. Each mode has different EQ and speaker presets ranging from 2CH simulated 3D in Headphones up to full 7.1 surround. Might want to explore your options to see if you can re-enable the additional speakers.
