So are you saying that if the early versions are useless, the starting trials should just be eliminated since the weapons aren't even good yet?

I wouldn't be against it. Cumulative requirements could also be looked into (2-4x paths have multiple "Kill 700 X" types, as an example), or as I mentioned earlier specific to weather trials, let SCH spells help toward them.
I have no qualms with the starting trials being useless. They're relatively easy and the weapon will give inventory -1 when it's completed so might as well plan accordingly from the get go. It's fun turning a weapon from nothing into something powerful.
The only problem I see is that the work versus rewards is backwards. Kill monsters for the first nine trials, get a meh weapon. Turn in buyable items for three trials, get a POWERTHIRST weapon.
So then don't do it if you don't have time. Magian trials are some of the best weapons in the game aside from relic/mythic/empyreans. The quests are already soloable. The associated day will come 3 times every Earth day. You're telling me that people are so busy that they can't squeeze in a few kills within hour long windows that happen 3 times every single day? How could they possibly have time for ANYTHING in that event? I had to fit in Darksday kills for my Shareeravdi, and even with 8 and 1/2 hours of work every day plus 3 hours commuting, I was able to get something done at least twice a week.
So if you remove the weather/day requirement, why not go to the next logical step and say "It takes too long to grind out all these kills for my magian weapon. I'm too busy. Can we just make it so that you buy upgrades from NPCs?" Then you can finish quickly and go back to berating the devs for not creating enough content to keep you busy.
It sounded more like you were expecting earth weather on clear/overcast days. And if you are sitting around for 3 hours for 5 minutes of random weather to pop, then yeah....it's going to feel like it's taking forever and a day to finish.
On the other hand...if you check the weather NPC's in town before heading out (or OP/tele around and use your specs), ask lsmates to check it if they are in the region, use the weather site's log, check the calendar date to see if the weather is even a viable option for the season......you will gain a pretty good feel for whether it is worth it to hold out for the weather or just lookup the times for the day of week on one of the many online timers and plan accodingly---work on trial, or do something else. It really isn't that big of a deal to do many of them on the day of the week if you take advantage of Abyssea on some of them...for others, holding out a few days to a week for weather to be in season isn't all that bad either if there are more constraints on your play time.
Lets face it... compared to completing mythic/relic, Elemental Magians, by FAR, pale in comparison.
