Upgrading to Abyssea -- Need Help

So, I stopped playing a little over a year ago and am coming back to find that there are new scenarios/expansions I need, such as the Abyssea collection. Apparently, the only way to get that is through purchasing and downloading an entire new copy of FFXI: Ultimate Edition?

So, I have done that through Steam and my wife did it through Amazon. But it does not seem we are able to just upgrade our copies, but we have to uninstall the ENTIRE game and REINSTALL in full? Which means a full 20,000 file update??? Seriously? This process cannot be any better for a game I am paying for?

Is there something I am missing or a way I can circumvent this and just upgrade the things I need?

Please help... Getting pretty frustrated.

So, I just found out that all I needed to do was purchase the keys, I didn't even need to let the game download because all of the files were in the version update I had already run yesterday. All I had to do was get the codes from Steam and register them and I would have been done. However, once you download the steam files, your old install file is broken and you cannot use it.

Why is this information not readily available by SE? Why can't I just buy the codes from the playonline website, register them, and save myself wasted hours of my life?

it is because steam sucks always has. I purchased through the gamestops impulse program, it trys to install then fails at pol, but it DOES install the whole FFXI folder with all the required files to program files, I found when it does that, just copy them all to your existing FFXI folder and then update(backup your macros first though or you will lose them.)


and you can't if you reg the keys the game will tell you that even though you have the keys, you do not have the files therefore you can;t enter the areas, you have to use the install to install them.

I think you can, but you'd have to navigate through the maze of menus and odd naming schemes.
