I love how authoritatively people state this, despite having no access to SquareEnix's subscription numbers.

And how they've done this exactly for the entire lifespan of the game.

Because frustrated players are so arrogant that they believe their frustration extends to everyone.

Well, from the amount of angry posters across all forums, its not really so out there that its happening.

I'll quit after I accomplish all the goals I have in the game. This hasn't happened yet. And when I do, I'm humble enough to know that it's for my reasons, not under some delusion that it's because the game is failing.

It's funny to me how people say they are quitting because they just don't find it fun anymore and SE isn't giving them anything fun, that people always come back with"LOL NO, FFXI IS STILL FUN FOR ME SO YOU ARE LYING!"

If you still get enjoyment out of the game, good for you, doesn't mean everyone else does.

Usually, people who are content will not openly voice their opinion about how happy they are. Nobody marches on Washington holding signs that say "Everything is fine!" It's really not a fair indicator of the health of the game. You can't authoritatively say "the game is dying" without actual subscription numbers.

I guess you could point to recent server merges, but those were happening while Abyssea was in full swing, the supposed revival that saved the fledgling game.

And let's not forget that people have been saying "the game is dying because of X, Y, and Z" (X, Y, and Z being whatever came out in the most recent updates), since 2005. Yet the game continues. Odd.

It's because people who are quitting are projecting this dissatisfaction onto the game as a whole, as if it is inconceivable to them that the game could still be fun and that, because they are dissatisfied, the game is dying. Such arrogance is unbelievable.

I haven't logged in to play in about 2 months now. I'm giving development another update to see what happens to ToM and old ToAU stuff before I cancel my subscription. There has been nothing to be excited about since abyssea and everything that does come out feels like a punishment.

If I do quit I'm going to spend all my time playing LoL/DoTA 2 and waiting patiently for Guild Wars 2.

VW was pretty exciting when it first game out, till drop rates were figured out, and they added more and more temps/atmacites to make it feel like abyssea all over again.

Personally, most of what they have planned just doesnt excite me at all. If dungeon crawl is nice, might make me take interest as it would give me a place to actually play with the stuff I have.

And Zarchery, yeah, I can see why the game is still very exciting for you with the amount of things you still need to do.

Currently I'm not preparing to quit, but I no longer have the strong passion for this game as I once did. Only reason I'm even remotely enjoying the game right now is because I found some new friends who are missing a lot of things and collecting new armor for them (along with their excitement over completing it) is enough to keep me coming back on. For now.

But reasons I would consider quitting:
    1. I'm paying money for a game I no longer enjoy logging onto. Even now I'm often at this point when my friends aren't on.
    2. No more magians. I love magians, they're my favorite past time. But I'm completing more and more of my staves and will eventually have none left. I hope they add some more enhancements to the staves to make them more powerful, but, seeing their hunger for 'balance' I have a feeling that'll never happen...
    3. Nerfing. I hate nerfing. Stop making jobs less powerful -- go the other way like you were for awhile and buff up jobs that are lacking.
    4. Lack of new content. I want a new story to explore... but I want it to be a part of Vana'diel. Ever since ToAU came out the game has been drifting away from the original story and I've not liked that. I want more involvement with the Zilarts and the Kuluu. Even if we somehow went back into their time or something. (Divergence of WotG's and Abyssea's dimensions from our world has definitely destroyed a lot of satisfaction for me though. It feels as if our world isn't as special or as "real" as it once was.)
    5. Stress. A lot of newer content seems to be full of it. When I was 15 I was willing to go through the stress and suffering of events to get armor I wanted. Now I'm 23 and that doesn't fly well anymore. I won't spend 4 hours a day, twice a week for 3 years doing an event I hate to get armor. I won't put up with the headaches of selfish players. I won't put up with the favoritism of linkshell leaders. If that's the only way to play then I quit.

Abyssea was one of the best things to happen to FFXI. If SE came out with another amazing event like it, where small groups of friends could get armor relatively quick and have fun doing it, then I'd happily continue paying for subscriptions even after I collected all of my gear. I have all of the +2 I want for BLM and SMN, all of the atmas and abyssites I could desire. But I still play. Completing gear doesn't mean a player gets bored with a game and quits it. It's fun showing off the gear and it's fun helping friends achieve it too. If they think they have to stretch content out for the sake of subscription money, then I feel sorry for them.

During Abyssea nothing would of made me quit, because I was having a blast, had so many new things to do and there were few .001 drop rates for artifical gameplay extenders. Right now with very low amounts of new content, annoying drop rates that ruin VW, low budget while too much money is spent on 14 and other annoyances it's not the same, I play because there isn't anything else I want to move to (FF14 can kiss my ass, no matter what they do with that I'll never jump in a Square skinner box MMO again). I like FFXI, I carry on playing and hoping that more good things will come out but still fairly annoyed at the lackluster decisions and massive time grind ideas.

I was the same when I played PSO, I was annoyed at many aspects of that game but still played it for a long time, as soon as something new came out that actually clicked with me (ffxi) I literally never logged back into PSO ever again (and I was excessively hardcore about that game too). FFXI is the same really, if something good comes out that clicks with me while I'm in a mood as I am right now with FFXI then that will be it.

As addict is only an addict till they can get a better fix elsewhere, Square may have a lot of addicted players but if they keep us at a low point too long someone else will find a better hook for us.
