Personally, I don't think they should have shut the servers down. Call me insensitive, but tragedies happen every day yet we all ignore them and spend our time complaining that we can't get the empress hairpin to drop. If the Japanese can't be disciplined enough to conserve their own electricity, why should we have to suffer for it? That is something I'd expect from my fellow Americans, not a supposedly smarter society like the Japanese. If SE really wanted to prevent people logging on from Japan, it seems like they could block certain IP addresses or something.

A whole week. I might have to do something drastic... like omg read a book or something!

I don't think you're understanding the entire issue here. Japan lost two nuclear reactors, and might also have lost some of the undersea electricity cables from the mainland. Japan is an island nation, it is much harder to import electricity than it is for countries on the mainland. There simply isn't enough electricity produced in japan to keep every company's servers online all the time.

It is not to keep japanese players from playing, it is because SE themselves aren't allocated enough power to keep them running 24/7. Last thing I heard, there were controlled rolling blackouts all over the country, so that everything that wasn't a critical function like a hospital only was given electricity for a certain period per day.

S-E might have enough backup generators to keep a few servers online (such as the web servers and this forum), but probably not enough to keep the dozens of servers that are running FF11 and FF14 online without external power.

This is however off-topic, and the issue has been discussed to death in a number of other threads already.

Yes but think of this as a business (which it is) there was 1,800 players online that day on my server alone alot of them where japanese so some dont realy care about the power consumtion if they where they wouldn't have been playing the game. We all got billed this month for the game. WE payed for there service which they cut us all off from, Not cus they had too but they wanted too. With out our consent. Those 1,800 paid there bill thats 12.95 from each of those ppl thats up 23310$ Just from my server alone, Not counting the other servers. They should rent a generator not like there useing the power on the server they got alot of money from us and now its like there takeing it and running. Business is Business This might make alot of ppl quit. They should refund our money or move the server's to another place for the time being.

Sorry to double post, but we're not being billed all of April to make up for this one week.

Please read the announcements before rudely accusing Square Enix of being money-greedy mongrels. Thank you.

After watching the news I'm aware of that Tokyo runs like normal: work, commute, shopping... I myself do not understand how a few servers can help but who knows. I believe SE made the right move I just hope FF won't be down for too long.
