    It won't mute all of the programs.

    But, it'd be nice for PS2, XBox360, and players not on Windows 7.
    I'm sorry but Kalilla's directions will indeed mute all of your programs completely.
    Tagrineth, if you're going to throw around "reading comprehension" I would suggest you learn a little more about computers before doing so.

    Windows 7's built in Volume Mixer (the directions I just told you...) has the power to mute specific programs, even JUST FFXI. It will NOT mute your entire system.

    By clicking the program's speaker icon in Volume Mixer it is marked with a sign which mutes the program.

    And Meyi you are correct, so that would be a nice request now that you mention that.

    I'm on Windows Vista and I do exactly what Kalilla explains here. Just as a fyi, lol.

    Eh... whatever. That's still a very ghetto method to do it, and exclusive to Win7

    Please make sure you fully understand what is being discussed before calling other people stupid (effectually).

    Yes, its exclusive to an operating system you should be running. Skipping Vista was understandable, but XP will eventually (is already?) not be supported by MS anymore. This isn't a "ghetto method,' either. It's easy an convenient, and often used to silence applications like your web browser which often don't have volume controls of their own at all.

    (Side note; if using "unofficial windower", it will silence the game while it is minimized, which is even simpler than finding an ingame mute checkbox)

    Hush bro. Not everyone has money to afford a new computer. I got lucky and I'm damn thankful my father was willing to buy me a computer with Windows 7 for my birthday, but not everyone has money just lying around to throw into a new computer. Need to be less judgmental.

    Maybe if it just came out two years ago...

    XP = Aug 2001
    Vista = Nov 2006
    7 = July 2009
    8 = mid 2012

    I see no reason why you can't save up 50-100 dollars a year and in 10 years get a new pc...

    Thanks for the Windows 7 tip. That should work for me. Not so much for those on other OS's. According to Gartner, the penetration rate of W7 should reach 42% by the end of the year. That's a lot of XP out there (granted, most of that stat will be enterprise which likely is overwhelmingly still on XP). Then, of course, there are the console versions.

    But really, is it so hard to implement in the game itself?

    Ingame just goto Config > gameplay > move soundfx slider to 0. Takes about 5 seconds, I know it would be nice to have a mute button but really it's not that bad right now.
