The Sandy OP / Moogle NPC also freezes my game. I play on a PS2. I can still move my camera, send tells, etc. But I can't move my character or get unfrozen from the NPC. I used to be able to wait it out after a while but now it doesn't seem to unfreeze, so I have to incorrectly shut off my PS2 and relaunch FFXI. This is a glitch I've been seeing a lot of and SE really needs to fix this. Until then I recommend moving to a different nation.
I don't experience freezing entering/exiting abyssea areas, however.

DNAS error is more than likely from the freezing or lagging keeping your system from authenticating your version of FFXI via the internet causing your connection to lag out.

That authentication has to be kept basically at all times, it checks to see if you are using a correct, non-hacked version of software or not. From my understanding of it that is what it is used for. It verifies your game is a genuine copy. I'd say you are losing that connection while you are trying to access the NPC.

If it is a patchable fix, like the lag from the signet NPC's seen before, then SE will probably fix it....I don't see why it's freezing up completely tho. I know of which you are talking about. I've had that happen before even on PC then eventually the game lags out and you get an internet connection error, etc, etc.

The game has to do a check with the servers when you talk to certain npc's like outpost warp or Abyssea portals. It has to check with the server your available outposts, level, mog tablet availability, nation control, or access to. It very well could be a patchable fix.

yeah.. I ran into it once on the PC too. Fortunately, my firewall logged a ping attempt at the same time...did DNS/WHOIS lookups, and it was one of SE's servers. Whitelisted it, and the problem was fixed.

Just wonder if perhaps something is disrupting the connection on the ISP side or maybe your router. If you haven't enabled the port forwarding for FFXI--might want to look into setting that up when the servers come back up. I forget the port range (I never set it up myself as I just whitelist IP's when I need to), maybe someone can post it real quick.

Thread Title: Certain NPCs freezing on PS2

    Platform:
    PlayStation 2

    ISP:
    RoadRunner

    Type of Internet Connection:
    cable

    Internet Connection Speed:
    768 kbit/s

    Date & Time:
    2011 Apirl 22 21:00

    Frequency:
    Sometimes

    Character Name:
    Ziyyigotipyigo

    Race:
    TarutaruM

    World:
    Sylph

    Main Job:
    DNC50

    Support Job:
    BLM25

    Area and Coordinates:
various (e.g. Nomad Moogle, Northern San d'Oria, K-9)

    Party or Solo:
    solo

    NPC Name:
various (e.g. Nomad Moogle, Northern San d'Oria, K-9)

    Monster Name:
    none

    Steps:

    1.) Log on using a PlayStation 2
2.) Attempt to talk to an NPC whose dialog will involve presenting the player a menu choice (e.g. outpost teleportation, synthesis image support, etc.)
3.) About 1/3 to 1/2 of the time, the NPC's first statement will hang. No dialog will come up, however gameplay will behave as if you are involved in dialog (e.g. cannot move, most commands will not work, main menu is inaccessible)
4.) Regular gameplay will not return until the NPC's dialog begins properly. This can take anywhere from 1 minute to 1 hour or more.

    * I have heard speculation that having a spell cast on the player by another player, causing an "event skipped" message, will rescue the stuck player.

EDIT: On further thought, the problem may be limited to NPCs that have the ability to "cast a spell" on players (teleportation, imagery support, etc.).

    Basie,

We can offer a few suggestions if you are experiencing any of the following:
    • Have difficulty connecting to or staying connected to the PlayOnline Viewer or FINAL FANTASY XI
    • Crash, receive a black screen error, or get stuck at the downloading data screen upon clicking your character handle or character select button
    • See your the lag meter turn red
    • Encounter increased lag or connection problems near crowed areas
    • Have trouble accessing specific zone(s)
    • Have trouble logging in with specific character(s)
    • Receive any of these errors: 3113, 3100, 4001, 1160

    Suggestions:
    4. Check to make sure you have properly configured or turned off any of the following: Routers, Proxy Servers, NAT Servers, Internet Connection Sharing services.
    5. If you are using any kind of software/hardware Internet Sharing service/device the following ports need INCOMING access to your PC: TCP 1024 - 65535, UDP 53, and 50000 - 65535. Also, check to make sure that the ports mentioned are not blocked by your ISP for INCOMING access. Proper configuration of any of the above items mentioned should be done by following the instructions in the software/hardware manual or calling the manufacturer's technical support.
    6. If you are using a router, and have configured that router for port forwarding, temporarily bypass that router and connect directly to the modem.

Please take note of the following:
    • Proxy servers, and satellite connections are not supported and do not work correctly with FINAL FANTASY XI.
    • Your router may require that you use a PC to configure your network settings. For more information about how to configure your network settings, please refer to the instruction manual that came with your router or contact the manufacturer directly.
    • If your Internet Service Provider (ISP) specifies a DNS server, you need to make sure to configure your settings to allow packets to pass through UDP Port 53 as well. For more information, please refer to the instruction manual for your router or the information provided by your ISP.
