They 100% exist and no macro spamming will beat them. Unlike claiming mobs there is no claim delay for ???s.

Also ASE as GG said only allows you to see the ??? so instead of using

The only advantage is if there happens to be a NPC in between you and the ??? or a chest on top of the ??? otherwise there is no advantage to targeting the ??? ahead of time.
