I'm speaking of the gold and silver medals displayed over your avatar. I wonder what purpose they serve when I can think of 2 good reasons to dislike them:
1. They're redundant. They're a reflection of your post count, and your EXACT post count is clearly visible about an inch lower than the medals.
2. They serve to perpetuate the false belief that someone who posts more frequently is a higher-quality contributor to the forums than someone who picks and chooses what to post about. I'm not saying removing the medal system would instantly eliminate 1-liner replies from the forums of "lol troll", "qft", or various other things which add NOTHING VALUABLE TO THE CONVERSATION, but good god, stop giving those guys freaking medals.
...now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the inverse is true. Just because a person's post count is low doesn't mean they're a positive influence on the forums either. The tester symbol is a nice touch certainly- reveals people who give up their time to essentially WORK FOR SE PRO BONO PUBLICO. They're doing work for all of us, and they're doing it for free, so they deserve a little recognition. But I don't care if someone has a billion posts. I care more about the quality of each individual post they make. So why give medals for post count?
I know it's been brought up before but I dunno if it was properly addressed. Eh, I could be wrong. Is there anyone who REALLY supports the current use of the medal system? If so, why?
