It's one of my favorite things too! It's been completely dead on my server for a few years now, at least. It's so disappointing. Servers like Fenrir that still do it actively are really interesting, people clearly have a love for the sport. Doesn't matter they won't get some big shiny reward or a ton of exp for it (though I think the exp reward SHOULD be raised), it's heartwarming to see them do something solely for the fun of it. One of my favorite parts was the gearswap penalty during matches, where you couldn't move or attack for several seconds after changing equipment (aside from ammo slot anyway.) Made it impossible/suicidal to change gear spontaneously during the heat of battle, which was a highly refreshing strategic change from how the rest of the game works. And like you said, fighting other players is always completely unpredictable and exciting! Not like the brain-dead mob AI that blindly follows its enmity system.
It's pretty depressing that SE has ignored it for many years now, it could've grown into something even greater with a few updates focused on balance and JA revision. I think the last time it even got any kind of tiny obligatory update was back in 07 when DNC and SCH chevrons were added?
I pray someday SE knows that Ballista/Brenner has a small cult following and will at least attempt to revive it in the eyes of the general population.
P.S: The end of the Brenner introduction cutscene hinted that Shantotto was planning her own little PVP-related event. Ballista originated in San d'Orian history, Brenner originated in Bastokan history. Woulda been neat to see what Windurst coulda cooked up. But of course, nothing ever came of it since then... And I'm pretty sure Laurel Crown and Stars Cap are now the rarest items ingame bcuz there's never been a way to get em since the ol' ballista royale of 05, and there's never been another since.
