they keep tinkering with it... last night it had me joining the test server, and assigned a town(never applied), now all that is gone. Knowing SE's history with adding new things to this game, gonna probly be lots of kinks for them to work out the first couple of weeks.

It has nothing to do with the test server. The Town name thing was related to your nation - some people theorized that it was an unfinished forum feature pulling info from the character database without changing it into useful information. Nations were numbered as follows:
San d'Oria = 0, Bastok = 1, Windurst = 2
