I love the SMN job, however it seems like it is missing something. Whips, the weapon of choose for summoner. My all time favorite summoner, Rydia, was pretty handy with a whip. Is there room in the FFXI world for whips?

I just can't picture myself using a whip.....

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but there isn't any room for whips in FFXI, SE says it would be too much work.

Summoner [suhm-uhn-er]
1. Mystics who conjure avatars to fight by their sides, then sit back and enjoy the show while paying close attention to their MP as their minions deliver devastating blows to adversaries and provide aid to allies.
2. Not a melee
inb4 they add a whip into the next Buffolo event or something.
SMN99/SAM99/DNC99/PLD99/THF99
Summoning magic skill: 545

Well then, The obvious Solution is to create a new Expansion and add Whips to it as well.
And give us an A-! Make it 2-handed, and Summoner Specific. A SMN Specific Set of weapons? Imagine the possibilities.
IMAGINE THEM

A 2-handed whip? That doesn't make any sense to me at all.
Considering SE's stance on this, I have my doubts it will ever happen. Easier would be to make a Whip a sub type of throwing weapons that act much like returning weapons, and have an animation on the mob that is whip-like.
Summoners will have to get Throwing (or alternatively, a new skill, but this is unnecessary) as a native skill of course, but it wouldn't be too much further from there to add two dozen whips that do a decent amount of damage.
This would also help deal with balance issues that come from having to balance around perp cost staves, as it would just be a class of throwing weapon in a way.
Whips are nice, but they were really not used for high-end damage, so they would roughly have the same stats of a Staff without the mage enhancements of Staves.
And most jobs would be able to wield them too.
