    I wouldn't pay for it. I'd just wait for someone to upload all the shiny new HQ dats somewhere.

    They could easily make FFXI check to see if it's using the high res textures and report that information to the server at random intervals. And if you were using them but didn't have the HD update registered you'd get an email telling you to either buy the HD update or loose your account.
