When I played ffxiv, I remember the only thing that really drew me to it was the ability to use Japanese in game on an American system. Is there any reason we can't get this in xi? It'd be wonderful.

You can download the JP POL viewer, edit the windows registry so the JP pol viewer can see your NA FFXI files, and launch the viewer for whatever langyage you want to play in. The full instructions can be found in google. Or if you just want to type in Japanese, patch windows with JIS support and get a JP keyboard.
The Original Blue Mage
I think even with a JP system, the non-JP version of FFXI "blocks" the use of the chraacters.
I don't know if it's changed since then, but I did try to use Japanese PoL, but it wouldn't actually let me access ffxi (this was about two years ago though). Otherwise, I can use Japanese just fine on my computer, and I could use it just fine in ffxiv (where I had a Japanese ls), but if I try to do it in xi, it will either automatically switch back to English, or insert weird characters.
Yeah, the IME is disabled in the client even though the options for some weird reason sometimes pop up for me, they're un-usable. :[
As far as I know, there is no way of enabling it without using prohibited ways, other than using a Japanese game (or just the viewer?) as stated here.
I don't remember if the account needs to be actually Japanese as well?
It is very annoying, and I am quite sure they could allow us to take advantage of it, but I'm also quite sure they just wont.
In all fairness, the Japanese should not be allowed to write in 'our letters' since we're not allowed 'theirs'.

...or so the legend says.
