Well actually this is similar to what Netflix did recently this month in July. They didn't give an explanation, but when you're notified you can't change your plan until next month. By then it is to late and they already charged you.

...Banks spontaneously change the way they do business on a semi-regular basis.. I went from being able to get money orders in any amount for free to having a 1,000 dollar cap and a 5 dollar charge on each money order I get. (capped, presumably so that they can get extra swag out of you when yo're paying for things over 1,000 dollars)
I think of a lot of other examples of instances where the entire way i conducted business with a company completely changed out of nowhere with little more than an "oh yeah, this is what we're doing. Deal with it." message to preempt it.
Let's stop pretending that Square is the only company to do things like this.
The situation sucks for some people, for me I'm trying to figure out exactly how I'm supposed to transfer over since it won't let me (recently reactivated), but its not anything different than most of us have dealt with coming from one or more other companies we've dealt with in the past.
Netflix's changes actually make sense, the only problem is that they don't let you preemptively cancel the service before they initiate the charging sequence. That's kind of screwed up, but as I said before, its not like they're the only ones who do things like that.
No one here said SE has a LEGAL REQUIREMENT to explain themselves. They have a MORAL OBLIGATION. The idea here is that if they wish to keep many customers, they SHOULD explain themselves at the very least to make such a change more palatable to the userbase. Being upfront and honest about business practices promotes brand/company loyalty through rapport with the customer. Obviously you can't understand this.
People with business mentalities such as yours, who care nothing about what a business should or shouldn't do so long as it's legal in that the company can exist, is the exact reason the world economy is in the hole to begin with. There is no more moral obligation to have ethical practices in order to really take care of its customers because there will always be others to nickel and dime to death. Companies no longer give a damn about the people that give them money, they only want more of it and dealing with those customers is merely a means to an end.
Now, the only way for people to show companies that they don't want to be screwed over is by not doing business with them. As such, that is what many people will be doing (rather, will not be doing) thanks to this change unless SE can satiate those customers.
It's the same story told throughout the ages. Don't be an asshole. Don't bite the hand that feeds you. Don't run with scissors. Er, wait...
