Yes they do, just like any other business or company that we contract with and pay money for to provide a service would have to.
The playerbase wasn't asked it's opinion on how it would like to see any billing changes made, it was just done because they could. Ok, so that's not even the issue here. The issue is that people are not being given the option to pay with their credit/debit cards and people are understandably upset about it, SE should explain why they can't continue to accept payment in the manner that has worked for years or at least make it one of the options.
No other business on this planet would be allowed to conduct business in this manner. If your bank suddenly decided not to honor payments you made either by check or bank debit/credit card or your CC Company decided not to process any payments you made for goods and services contracted for and received, but instead wanted you to open an account through a 3rd party to buy XYZ funny money to process such, you would certainly be asking for an explanation.
And, when, at the beginning of August or September, you are are unable to access your FFXI account because even though you did everything perfectly, your payment doesn't process, you will be asking why.
Sure, people can make the choice to go with the flow or not, but let's be honest, SE is making everyone jump through unecessary hoops here.
Proud to be "Old School" and to have completed CoP pre-nerf
You really are totally clueless about 'contracts' and your sense of entitlement about what SE should and shouldn't tell you is amusing.
SE provide a monthly service, the only right you have is to cancel if should they change the terms and conditions, their only liability is to give you at least a month's notice, YOU HAVE NO RIGHTS OTHER THAN THAT and SE have no requirement at all to explain their business decisions to you.
...Banks spontaneously change the way they do business on a semi-regular basis.. I went from being able to get money orders in any amount for free to having a 1,000 dollar cap and a 5 dollar charge on each money order I get. (capped, presumably so that they can get extra swag out of you when yo're paying for things over 1,000 dollars)
I think of a lot of other examples of instances where the entire way i conducted business with a company completely changed out of nowhere with little more than an "oh yeah, this is what we're doing. Deal with it." message to preempt it.
Let's stop pretending that Square is the only company to do things like this.
The situation sucks for some people, for me I'm trying to figure out exactly how I'm supposed to transfer over since it won't let me (recently reactivated), but its not anything different than most of us have dealt with coming from one or more other companies we've dealt with in the past.
Netflix's changes actually make sense, the only problem is that they don't let you preemptively cancel the service before they initiate the charging sequence. That's kind of screwed up, but as I said before, its not like they're the only ones who do things like that.
