While some aspects of FFXI deserve to be top priority for the developers, there are also other aspects of the game that deserve attention for their ease of resolution.
I welcome anyone else to mention their own FFXI pet peeves.
Here's a couple of my own.
Mining, fishing etc. can be accomplished with a macro, because it only takes one item to accomplish the task. However, sometimes multiple items of the same type need to be used on a target, and so more button mashing becomes necessary.
There are numerous examples of this, the Yagudo Necklace quest comes to mind--and is still relevant even today. Multiple items must be used, so more button mashing is necessary. What makes it under-stimulating is that it must be done over and over again, creating monotony.
It would be handy if multiple items of the same type could be traded to NPCs. A command could go like so:
/item "Millioncorn" {3} <t>
or
/item "Yagudo Necklace" {4} <t>
where the NPC is targeted.
This would allow for faster, easier, more efficient trades to the NPCs, so that player time can be spent on more rewarding activities.
Smarter NPCs.
Ominous Cloud does not like his job, and I doubt he could get a better one because of his inability to do math. If you trade him 7 stacks of Shihei and 8 Wijnruits, he will not accept them. Could he not just give you one Winjuit back? Or if you trade him 7 stacks of Shihei, but only 6 Wijnruits, couldn't he just give the extra stack of Shihei back? If you trade a Warp NPC more than 300 gil, they don't rip you off, and only take as much as is needed. So what's Cloud's problem?
Another instance is NPCs only accepting a finite about of an item at a time, instead of doing the math, giving you gil in proportion to how many items you trade in, and having the number of quests completed counter go up proportionally as well.
This may have been mentioned elsewhere, but it would be nice to hear from Camate on this, yea or nay. Another instance is crafting. Crafting sessions grow into drudgery after so long, selecting the same items over and over again without any variation.
Notice how equiping gear is just a matter of putting items into slots, and it can be macro'd. The delivery box system is just the same thing, except placement doesn't matter. So, why not have a macro for crafting? Granted, it would only work for up to 6 items, but I for one would take it! The syntax could go thusly:
/item Wind Crystal <me> /equip Slot1 "Bast Parchment" {2}
/equip Slot 2 "Black Ink" {1}
These issues are not at all dramatic; I'm not saying they're catastrophies that need SE's urgent attention, just minor annoyances that could use some tweaking.
What are yours?
