Because it's been greenwich mean time for like 80 years and still is.
I didn't even know they changed it. Also all of the people I know that live in that time zone use GMT still.
First off, the meme you're looking for is "at least 100" (while UTC is "only" 50 years old). Secondly, this is the atomic age, we don't use ephemeris seconds any more (let alone mean solar seconds). Third (and most importantly), our days start at midnight, not noon.
People who don't know the difference between GMT and UTC shouldn't be using "GMT," especially when they're pulling UTC off of NTP servers to begin with. Even if you're trying to be deferent to the British players, they're on BST at the moment anyway.
