I do like this idea so long as it isn't overcomplicated.

It is a valid point to say that a new model for every helmet would be required if you got NEW hairstyles available. Changing between current ones would work, even changing it's color as most models cover and adjust the hair based on where it lays. the color would be the same.

As for adding eye colors, scars, dimples etc, that sounds pretty nice actually. I can't see it interfering with much.

To be honest though, I wish my tail color matched my hair color...

Every combination of eye color, scars, dimples, etc, would need a separate version of the character's head and require tons of RAM that the PS2 doesn't have.
Now, it probably wouldn't take a lot of RAM, really. I mean maybe you could even squeeze it into 10 MB, but that's in fact 33% of all the RAM the PS2 has got available.

I don't see why not, people already mod the game and make their characters look however they want it. SE could probably do the same and make it official. If there is a problem on how gear looks...say on the head and if it's being a big problem then just don't add the head piece and just show the hairdo. People wear hairpins but they don't actually show the hairpins on your head.

If you don't see why not, you should probably read my post again .

People can datswap whatever they want on the PC without issues, becuase there are no RAM issues you need to care about there. New official equipment would need to display correctly on both PS2 and PC platforms, or you'd have to drop PS2 support.

The idea is nice but I have to ask...

...what kinda of salon do you go to that adds scars?

"I think I want to go with something simple, but fun, for the spring... oh, and maybe a giant disfigurement across my face. Actually, let's go for the post-face replacement surgery look."

When people use DAT files to change their looks, it doesn't affect the server or your files for that matter. They are using an already existing file, a file that is in their computer. so no new file was added or anything. That is why they can do that stuff.

SE had talked about giving us a salon a while back, but deemed it to much work to do. 1 reason being they'd have to drop the PS2 or build a new HDD that has more space for the ps2, which would be too damn expensive for an obsolete console.

They could though stop providing service for the PS2 and bump everything up to XBOX360 standards. That wouldn't hinder the game so much. Also, they need to do something to keep up with the competition, and though 14 was that answer, it has failed. So they need to utilize what they know their fans like, that being 11 and do everything they can to capitalize on this product.

I think they should drop PS2 limitations and give this game a complete overhaul in graphics and what not. But, once again, money and time is everything.

If it was HDD issues, they wouldn't have had to drop PS2 support, The HDD is 40 GB, FFXI doesn't take nearly as much as that, and it takes even less on the PS2.

However, they do have to ask Sony for permission if they want to use more than the currently allocated storage space they have got.

Changing between existing models doesn't use up any more of teh ps2's resources; its a change to the characters server side saved data. Further the limit on the ps2 side for new additional models isn't HDD space, its ram. You misunderstood something or whoever said it originally did. Possibly lost in translation. That part about SE deeming it to much work, I am not arguing with; the original programming staff isn't there. Ever had to read someone elses possibly obfuscated and possibly non commented code? I'd bet both have happened when they rotated out members of programming staff over the years.

More about the PS2's HDD: the file system is very like the riserfs system, it's not difficult to expand a partition and the current partition for ffxi doesn't used anywhere near the whole drive, they do however have to remember that you may own other games that use some of the hdd space. Right now I think its partition size is around 12gb out of the 40gb space, but I'd have to go look. I'd estimate it could go to at least 25 without problems but that doesn't mean the ps2 can still support gobs of new content unfortunately.

I haven't seen that confirmed anywhere though I suspect it is so. Which would kill any future expansion very soon since its basically a dead platform.
