Cardians are Zonpa-Zippa's concept of automaton. So yeah they are automaons.
That being said, I don't think they'd be the right new head/frame people want(can't even imagine separating a cardian's head and body o.o).

then automatons, seeing as they are nothing more then a wooden frame housing

in their starfruit core.
