Honestly, I have no idea; it just came to me.
I did have a friend named Jibby before I retired my first character, so maybe that had something to do with it.

Forum: personal choices
Character: Random name generated from the system software, which is now the name I choose to name most if not all my characters in other games lol
Mules: Named after characters in some various short stories I've written
Aside from one mule name (which I kinda used as a joke to perpetuate Fairy's players-named-after-NMs-that-camped-Jeuno-AH), all have involved a series of characters I've drawn and written about over the years, and to this day still build upon them.
At the time I picked up XI, Ser was probably my favorite of the bunch, conceptually a reincarnation of a sort of warrior sorceress in a near-future, albeit run down Earth. Having never known her father and losing her mother to a criminal's act at a young age, her "imagination" led her into unknowingly tapping into events of her past life long, long ago. Granted, some came to think she was a little nuts, but eventually she'd chance upon the truth of her soul's memories when someone from that past entered her life. That arrival wasn't without purpose, and such began what I consider the "second story" of my musings, with the first technically being that past life (though she wasn't the centralmost figure to the overall plot).
Kals, the name itself, was me bastardizing the name of someone I used to RP with way back when on AOL. Her name was Kaslen. I hadn't realized it then, but at one point someone noticed all my female characters had names ending with an A. From the Latin perspective, which I suspect my inspiration since my first characters in all this sprung to life the year I was taking a Latin class, feminine things ending in A wasn't uncommon. So, juggle some letters, slap an A on it, and Kalsena was born. Her concept shares a similarity with Ser's past self in that she's also a fighter mage of sorts, but her elemental mastery would differ, as would her personality, figure, and other things. Quite bluntly, Kals is more me in terms of Tomboy+2 while Ser was more a demure, sensitive type. Regardless, she'd play an important role in the "first story" and is probably my second favorite female in it behind one I hadn't even mentioned yet, though has become one of my mules.
Just talking with people over the years has led to amusing ways of hearing their names spoken compared to I say them. Like with the Latin, I think it hints toward their own proclivities.

I wanted to call myself 'Seppuku' because most of my aliases on the net are 'Seppuku'. But it was taken and I didn't want to go for something like 'Seppuku05' because I was naming a character not making a forum profile.
My second line of names I wanted to try would be from the Norse mythology. Well, it's an FF game and FF borrows a lot of names from the Norse mythology and well it's a popular mythology so naturally all the ones I wanted were taken. I also am a fan of Mesopotamian Mythology, but Gilgamesh and Enkidu were also taken - I could have gone for Utnapishtim now that I look back, maybe Atrahasis. Meh, I wasn't going fish through my book shelf.
I picked 'Saefinn' because I picked out a character from my novel. He's an Icelandic bloke.
For my alternative character I went with 'Steinn', not after Steiner in FFIX but he was another character from my novel. I wanted a Galka and Steinn is a character with an arsenal stashed in his kitchen, yet he's supposed to be a huggable bear, so Steinn would be appropriate. I suppose I'd have to keep a running theme with any characters that follow. If by some miracle I become a successful writer I know I'm screwed, but hey, what are the chances of that happening? XD
