Probably the most annoying part about gathering (harvesting, excavating/mining and logging) is wandering more or less aimlessly throughout the countryside, hitting the tab key or the d-pad over and over again, hoping to find a random spot to gather from.
How about something like a clear abyssite that will tell you where the nearest gathering point is? Maybe rig it so that you can only find one kind of gathering point (harvesting/excavation/logging/mining) at a time without trading items somewhere.
