Friend has forgotten his PlayOnline password, can't recover it

I had recently convinced my best friend to rejoin FFXI after years of inactivity. He went through the whole procedure of making a Square Enix account and buying Crysta for payment, but he's stuck on linking his old PlayOnline account to his new Square Enix account. He can't remember his password.

He also tried Square Enix's information center for help. The only even remotely relevant FAQs on the matter had to do with recovering the password for his Square Enix account. (which he has, having just made one) Even emailing them didn't help, he also got more back about his Square Enix account.

Is there anything he can do to get his old account back?
