Playing FF:XI on a tethered connection

So I'm in the army and have 24 hour duty coming up, I was thinking about tethering my computer to my cell phone and trying to play that way. I called my cellphone company and I get 2 gigs worth of data for 20 dollars...

Has anyone done this or known someone who has? How much data does ff:xi use per hour? And of course, is it playable on a 3G connection?

I would say it uses about 1 KB per second, so figure that in your equation.

How much it uses per hour I'm not exactly sure. It's been awhile but I think when I ran ffxi off a tethered connection it used I wanna say under 200 MB for the whole night (like 5pm to 2am or something). Any event it used less data than I thought it would. However being connected to a computer means you'll most likely use partial amount of data not directly conntected to ffxi so you'll have to watch that.

I wouldn't say to make running ffxi off a tether a habbit, but if you want to manage crafts/AH or a little bit of convo with ls mates or something it should be fine.

Well, I was hoping to do some quests....i played off dial up for a few months back in 06 and it wasn't that bad except for jueno and HNM's...and it seems like 3g is a little faster than dial up.

FFXI's connection to the game server is capped out at 56 kbps, which translates to about 7 KB/s. It was made for dial-up to work with it. Patching is uncapped for speed.

Ahhhh, 7 kb a second is a little more than I was expecting. I wonder if BCNM's are doable. Need to get my utsusemi scroll >_>

It's not always going to be 7 KB/s, just that is as fast as the connection can go, so that dial-up users aren't put at a disadvantage.

Ohhhhh thanks for clearing it up, I spent like an hour trying to find answers on google and it turns out that its not bad at all, its better than dial up in fact and it didn't run over 1G for playing most of the day

played with a old friend in the army, he red dot every now and then at major type events but never was D/C maybe once I can recall in an exp party.

Korpg is correct. I have experience with playing FFXI for long periods tethered. You will use about 4mb per hour of gameplay.
