    Approved/Disapproved internet security software

After experiencing problems with a new internet security software that caused D/C issues.
I've decided would it not be great if there was a list of security software that does not impede on game play.

Ok this is the software that I've used that has caused problems.
    Zonealarm Extreme Security

This is the one that has no problems at all
Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Firewall.

So what security software have you used that's caused problems and what do you use that is issue free.

It's not SE's responsibility to verify or ensure compatibility with XYZ security software that it didn't develop, as such security software is (technically) not a required component of Windows. Compatbility lists are only provided for things that are absolutely required, e.g. graphics card and drivers.

Just use a free AV program like AVG Free edition or Avast! Antivirus.

AVG is terrible. Terrible. Terrible. (Free version)

Microsoft Security Essentials is pretty awesome, and I highly recommend it despite the connotation that comes with it being labeled "Microsoft". NOD32 is also pretty top end, though you have to pay for that.

Just as a note for the OP's list, Avira antivirus has caused one-time disconnects for me whenever it started its automatic update. It was pretty mind-boggling to be disconnecting every night at 11pm until I figured it out.

AVG is just fine, for something that's free. If you're going to call something shiat, at least say way. But I have a feeling you're saying this because it's me.

I don't take things personally, so no it has nothing to do with you. I don't know why you'd think that.

I haven't used AVG in a long time, personally, but their 9.0 Free release was pretty screwed. Piles and piles of false positives, and the support for the free version dropped dramatically over time. BG had a sticky in the Tech forum for a long time compiling all the issues with AVG (can't really find it now, so it may be better. I just have a long memory with software).

And for the record, BG Tech has nothing to do with BG FFXI. BG's FFXI forum is something like 5-10% of the total traffic on BG, and most of the non-FFXI posters haven't played FFXI in years if they ever did at all.

Been using the free ZA since long before I started FFXI, never had any real problems with it other then needing to whitelist a site or subnet if it was getting blocked, but that has only happened a few times. The log tells you the IP and port ID of what got blocked, so when it did block FFXI's new IP's last year, it was easy to tell what was going on and fix it by just adding them to the safe sites list.

Symantec stopped releasing updates to the Corp. Edition I had been using for years, which really sucked as it was the least intrusive one they ever released and it never gave me any trouble with my games. They started pushing everyone to that slow .Net driven 360 crap that just eats system resources, so I took a chance on Avast 5.0 about a year ago and it's been a decent freebie. Will want to add the FFXI folder to the exception list though, as it (like others) has been known to give false positives on FFXI with some engine updates. Only real glitch I ever had with Avast was an issue with PowerDVD, but support worked with me and Cyberlink and after about 3 weeks, we tracked down the culprit and they pushed an update out a few weeks later that fixed it for everyone. Was pleasantly surprised with how well they communicated with me on that--even relayed an issue with my Asus card to Cyberlink and they got me a patch to fix an issue I was having with theatrical sound on my Blu-Ray playback. Not too shabby for a free product.

I have never ever had a false positive with AVG Free 2011, as of yet. No exceptions needed for FFXI or any other game I have. 9.0 was... quite a while ago.

That said, Avast is good for a free option, and I've heard plenty of good things about it, as you've mentioned.

Yeah, Microsoft's AV is very good. Works well and isn't as much of a memory hog as AVG is/was. Haven't used AVG since like 7.0 so I can't say much about that crap.
