FFXI is literally the only game (which is the only RPG in the FF franchise since FFXII to release since) keeping my interest in the Final Fantasy franchise.

This begs the question, does Square-Enix literally want Final Fantasy to cease to exist?
It honestly feels like everything they are doing is the opposite of what the fans actually want.
FFXII was the last RPG in the series after FFXI.
FFXIII was a linear movie game.
FFXV was a simplistic open world game, that leaned heavily on cutscenes.
FFXVI is a pure movie game. Barely a simplistic action game, and majorly a movie game.
FFXIV is a visual novel dress-up game, after it was "reborn."
Which is quite odd to me considering the Final Fantasy movie, The Spirits Within damaged Squaresoft significantly.
FFVII-Remake/Rebirth/Trilogy is also barely a RPG, and is the opposite of what fans wanted.
In my opinion FFVII-Remake is a completely different game.
Its not the same gameplay, not the same combat, not even the same story. Not even the same ratio cutscenes to gameplay. Literally a completely different game with just similar characters. The characters aren't even the same.
So seriously, is Square-Enix trying to end the Final Fantasy franchise, because if they are, excluding FFXI, that is the path I am on.
With actual RPG titles selling as much or dramatically more units than Final Fantasy it seems that can be the only goal in my eyes.
Games like:
-Elden Ring being a proper action RPG. (30 million units)
-Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 being a proper turn based RPG. (2-3 million units and climbing)
-Baldurs Gate 3 being another extremely popular RPG. (10 million units)
All which are proper RPG's.
You can't even "argue" that FF16 selling only 3 million units is because of "PS exclusive" considering CO:E33 is a brand new IP, and also on gamepass, and I'm 100% confident it will hit 3 million units very soon, considering it sold 2 million in just 12 days.
I am extremely curious if that is Square-Enix's goal, because absolutely nothing they are doing makes absolutely any sense to me. I'm beyond confused.
I personally didn't buy FF16, and it was the first title to release in 28 years I didn't buy at release (and never will buy.)
So again, if FFXI shutdown, I would cease to be a fan of Final Fantasy, because FFXIV, XV, and 16 are not the titles keeping my interest. Quite the opposite.
I would include XIII in that if it werent for XIII-2 and LR, which I do consider smaller RPG games.
I find it even more odd, considering I was begging for a game just like Elden Ring and Clair Obscur the entire time FFXIV was being reborn.
The majority of the FFXIV fans kept trying to insist that games like Elden Ring don't sell. Maybe they meant only in the MMO genre, but literally Elden Ring has sold more units than just about any other RPG .. if not being the best selling, so I am now even more confident in my predictions and opinions.
Edit: I will also add, that I already planned to quit FF, but since FFXI released the new mog bonanza items, and keep bringing back REMA weapons in mog bonanza I'm considering staying.
I already own multiple REMA including a Mythic, but I really struggled with creating Aeonic weapons, because most everyone either merc's and I really try to avoid merc'ing at all possible. I do plan to make an Aeonic myself if I never win one, but right now I'm playing other games, namely Elden Ring, Clair Obscur, and likely Baldur's Gate 3 soon. Certainly I am not playing FF16, or the Remake trilogy. I am a fan of RPG's not movie games.
I also just really enjoy FFXI for being a proper RPG.
RPG's to me, are games with:
-Elemental Wheel
-Poison/Lava floors.
-Hidden pathways
-False/fake walls
-Secret enemies.
-Ultimate weapons/weapon forging
-Rare and unique armor
-Various stats and character builds
-Secret treasure
Just.. go have someone actually beat Elden Ring and you will know what a RPG is.
Make a game better than that (I still find that extremely easy to do, at least with my knowledge of games, and my creativity) and you will see success. Continue to make games like FF15 and FF16 and you will see the end of a generational franchise. -

To be fair, they see players are passionate about the game and so they continue to update and work on it. They recently bought all new server hardware.
I think Square Enix is aware they would fake a lot of backlash if they closed the game, especially in japan. -

A reminder that this game is part of mainline series, otherwise you'll see things like FF14 1.0 just being dumped for real & saw no revival that is 2.0. On its own, FF11 already has a strong lore and gameplay that represents its own time, rather than catching up with the trends. While it might be outdated to some, it has its own charms. Unless SE somehow come with the plan to sort of archival but still keeping the game playable in sorts, atm this game isn't going nowhere.
That said, the game does need some sort of uplift since there's basic features needs to be up to date as of current, for one... like how I kept suggesting on the other QoL suggestion topic about having chat logs not interrupt-able during area zoning. And maybe unlocking fps beyond 30 amongst other things. -

SE has demonstrated a vested interest in ensuring that a main line Final Fantasy title doesn't become unplayable. I don't think there's much to fear here.

Do you press buttons and things happen? Then it's a video game. If you want to argue that it's in the visual novel genre, with very little user input, that's fine, but those are still technically games. -

MMO is a shrewd business. Companies do not keep games up and running because they like us, but because they like their investors and profits.
The only reason XI declined, was due to them pushing players away from XI to XIV imo. If you announce your MMO is going into maintenance mode, ppl are going to leave lol......

XI needs another expansion, and more content which would sent the msg "XI is alive and kicking." I can guarantee you, XI expansion content would cost less than past failures (XIV, Avengers, First Soldier, etc), but XI won't cost you millions like those did...... -
