Are we ever going to get that new UI that was promised like five years ago?

I was really excited when the new UI was announced, and I was really looking forward to it, but then it never actually got implemented on the live servers. It was only briefly available on the test server. I'm sure SE has still got the necessary code and project files for this kicking around somewhere in their office database. Surely it wouldn't be too difficult to just take what was available on the test server and push it to the live servers?

UI development was halted when they started planning on making Rhapsodies of Vana'diel. It's officially dead still.

No. A very early version appeared on a test server but there were apparently some major issues that blocked further development, as far as I understand, all work on it ceased a long time ago, before the announcement of Rhrapsodiies as noted above. Maybe with the game being PC only now they could reconsider it but I imagine it would be a lot of work.

What sort of issues?

The person behind it is no longer even working at SE to my knowledge (at least not on the XI project), so it won't happen. Then throw in the fact XIV is a thing, very little chance of it coming to fruition. It's on perma hiatus especially when XIV was being revamped and SE hasn't given much support towards XI since, since despite how simple an UI is compared to everything else, they just simply don't have the resources to do it.

Mainly the fact that the person who was developing it is gone. and basically nobody else had the code or something. As above.

Who was developing it?

No name was given, but it was stated by SE at some point. still trying to locate it

I would love to see them resurrect this project. Having an updated UI would help this game a lot, especially with newcomers. I recently brought friends into this game and explaining the UI to them was the hardest part tbh.

Man, I'd love for them to refresh the UI of this game...

the UI was designed as a PC specific UI that, in particular, made the mouse more functional and iirc it let you customize what was shown on the screen more. It was quite nice (though super rough with incomplete localization) and was slightly closer to the interface other online games commonly had. I'd been waiting for it for years before it was killed =\

I too really wanted this, a few minor things would make a huge difference in FFXI, the ability to have more than 3 options on a text box up at once, for example would do wonders, nobody is playing at 640x480 anymore!

Would be nice to see this worked on.
