What is the best THF Subjob?

Well, I feel kinda weak at the moment and DNC is my subjob.
But that might be because i'm THF. Anyways, what's the best subjob for THF?

NIN for almost all situations.

Not entirely true. Right now /NIN is the best for damage as well as survival (in most situations, depending on the mob /DNC can do better). If THF had native DW3 or higher, /WAR would be the best choice for highest damage output. There's plenty of situations where THF doesn't have to rely on shadows, especially with a healer by your side.

Edit: To answer the OP's question, /NIN is the best all around support job for THF these days. /DNC has its uses (although personally I prefer Bloody Bolts + /NIN personally), but for most mobs /NIN will still beat it for survival, especially inside Abyssea. The same holds true if you have any kind of healer or support with you.

I remember a day where /NIN was the only Sub job for thf :P, WAR pre-20, and /DNC Never existed XD. Hell there was occasionally subbing /SAM for sky gods. (which i didn't have leveled until it went out of style).

i'd agree, Bloody Bolts make up for the lack of /dnc healing. For low level mobs i'd use DNC tho

/dnc is for being a lazy bum.
You can just spam bloody bolts and not use utsu instead if you really "needed" the healing but didn't feel like casting.

Initially I avoided /NIN like the plague because... well mostly because I was lazy. This was before DNC was even an option (about 5 years before). So I took THF/WAR all the way to 75. As I typically had a reputation of being a very helpful person (still try to uphold that, but some rude people make it hard sometimes), no one every faulted me too much for it. Eventually though, after getting hit by magic that /NIN THFs would just absorb with shadows, I decided to just suck it up and level up /NIN and it has helped me solo infinitely more than I ever could with /WAR.

As for /DNC, my response to my friends who tell me to get it for THF - what's easier, recovering the HP lost when you get hit by a spell that does 1k+ dmg, or having a shadow prevent you from ever taking that dmg at all?

I keep both /nin and /dnc available. As always, there is never a 100% answer to a question, it is situational use. I use /nin when in party probably 85% of the time, using /dnc when we face a shortage of healing or massive AoE spam only. I reverse that solo, because with /dnc the only downtime I have is travel or death, survival is about the same. Also, if solo I'm usually farming for $, so I'm fighting stuff lower-level and I'd rather not be blowing cash. In Abyssea my nod is to /nin as my regular aby group doesn't have a nin main (the one we have is more valuable as war or rdm main) so I can at least work most of the grellow !! ninja procs.

To those that say it's always /nin, why? As I mentioned the AoE issue; if shadows are completely stripped the moment you put them up why bother? Supporting a friends shehei shop perhaps? Only reason I can see... The EVA boost is identical as near as I can tell between the two jobs and the other /nin spells are resisted so much (or interrupted) that I don't see much point. Debuffs from /dnc are never resisted, you just need to be able to hit your target. And with the right weapons the difference in DW tiers is negligible. And you can silence a /dnc all day without it bothering them, the only problem being you NPC may waste a silena if you have it out.

For my answer, its quite simple. He asked for the Best sub job. Its NIN. He didn't ask for a bunch of Situational Sub jobs.

in my opinion, /WAR is Situational Too, so is /SAM. i use /SAM when i fight Shinryu on THF when i go to Brew with my friend, So i can Sekkanoki before engaging and get 2 chances for a WS hint. or /DRK for Glavoid, But i wouldn't bring up either of those as the best sub job.

Thats why people aren't recommending /DNC. /DNC has its uses, its situational over /NIN though, for most of Endgame Activities involving 2 or more people, Your best bet is /NIN.

right now though, /NIN offers 5% more "Speed" over /DNC (i say 5% not 10% cause you could use Haste Samba). Which offers you faster kill speeds, etc. Also all the Debuffs on DNC are kinda weak, at best, and using them takes away largely from your over-all DPS due to the delay between Attacks and Job abilities, which gets worse as your haste levels rise.

Really though, Its because of Shadows, /NIN is ideal for shadows, There are some enemies where you just dont give a Fk. Like say, Glavoid for shells, but in that situation you're better off /DRK and just face-tanking and help stunning the big stuff like Gorge/Disgorge, especially if you low-man like i do.

It really breaks down too /NIN will be the most useful to him, its the "universal "can't go wrong" Sub job. /DNC, /WAR, /SAM, and /DRK are all Situational Sub jobs that should be maintained.

He has /DNC maintained according to his OP, So he's in the clear.

So its not that /DNC is useless, its that he asked for the best sub job, not the situational ones, and if you only got to chose 1 sub job to level ever, You'd pick /NIN, would you not? We (At lease I, Acknowledge uses for multiple subjobs, however i maintained to the confines of the Question asked, regardless of semantics.

/DNC is more of a situational, soloing subjob. It's fantastic for moving down loads of weak mobs while doing trials, farming drops, etc.

At level 90, /45NIN grants two significant boosts to THF: Dual Wield III and Subtle Blow III. This subjob will increase a THF's damage on all mobs and enhance THF's survivability when pitted against hard-hitting mobs and NMs. /NIN is my default subjob on THF.

I have /WAR leveled, but I can't say I use it. I'm no FFXI mathologist, but I'd think that it's somewhat comparable to /NIN. Berserk is a such an incredibly welcome JA on a job as attack-stared as THF. I lowman often enough in Abyssea that I need the shadows and added Subtle Blow from /NIN. I think it would be fun to sneak into an exp alluance on THF/WAR just to play with it for awhile, though.

BLU - for skilling up shield on EM+ Crabs
RDM- for skilling up shield on EM+ Crabs (be sure to Aura Steal Scissor Guard for +100% DEF)
PLD- skilling up shield (I spend a lot of time skilling up shield even though I hardly use it)
WAR- PT situations, for double/triple attack/berserk (super extensive use of bloody and blind bolts)
SAM- PvP, WS spam, etc.
RNG- Widescan for NM hunting
DRG- Accuracy Bonus and Wyvern Earring for those of you who haven't hit the haste cap with other gear.
PUP- whm puppet that sits in the back and slaps you with cures. Flashbulb stacks with blind bolt.

DNC- never use it. (wish SE allowed for a quest to un-learn the job so I could remove DNC from my job list)

I know things are situational (and subjective), but imo /DNC is easily the most useful out of these (and maybe /WAR).

And you forgot /BST and /BLM, since we're including every niche. In fact I can see more uses for /BST than almost all of the jobs you mentioned (even considering /DNC and /WAR).

Most definitely /NIN
