Video games rarely do well when made into movies.. and if they do well its not because of storyline
look at resident evil.. it has a horrible storyline.. but people don't go for that..
they just like the explosions and fight scenes.. and who can hate on smashing zombies >:U
Well people expect too much from a movie based upon a game. I thought Spirits Within was a decent movie. It wasn't like OMG, but it wasn't like...Gigli or something bad like that either. I'm down to watch a FFXI based movie.
FFXI Online The Movie The Game is what I would be worried about, lol.
SE doesn't need another movie, then they'll have to add another letter to their abriviation afterward.
if i had millions and millions of dollars to blow, id make it.... in 3D so you know it will sell
I quite enjoyed FF: Spirits within too. It would've been better though and probably would've been more successful if it didn't have Final Fantasy in the title but maybe a different title by Square since most people expected more out of it to relate more to the Final Fantasy worlds.
The movie had a few tiny things FF related like the mention of Gaia and meteor I think and a character named Sid and maybe a few other things I missed, but the movie was too Sci-Fi-like and FF is more fantasy-like.
FF7: Advent Children did a lot better though and I wouldn't mind there being a FFXI theatrical release but I think I would actually much prefer to see other FF games made into a movie before FFXI. I think SE would probably profit best with keeping FF as games though since making a movie for FF is a bit risky.
I'd pay for it.
<3 Advent Children.
Spirits Within not so much.
Perhaps SE would do better then Square. lol
I thought Spirit's Within was amazing for its time. The cost of production and the production that went into it, the story, the script, the humor, the characters represented what Square was good at doing, building character. I think somewhere Roger Ebert said that he wanted to see stuff like this be continued on American shores.
But due to it bombing box office, it wasn't. So sadness all around lol
Also Japanese movies are different from American movies, and I think Spirit's Within played more like an anime, you know with deeper plots and weirder ideas than American studios make.
As for FFXI movie, be awesome to see it happen, I think the cutscenes in FFXI are longer than most FF games.
Yeah they did such an awsome job doing motion capture and animating over it. lol
Oh and FFXI: AC's art direction was freaking amazing. Shows how artistic Square is, wonder why it didn't get nominated for Oscar, probably straight to DVD rules or something.
edit: FF: AC I mean
A think a Chains of Promathia movie would sell better.
Was blown away by the animation, but I honestly thought the story and characters were weak. I watched it for a third time last year and can't remember any of their names...
Same goes with FFXIII imo. Beautiful, but awful characters and plot.
Would love to see an FFXI movie. Would be very interested to see the story played out from start to finish over the course of a few hours (perhaps from the main NPCs points of view), rather than the half-a-decade i's taken me so far. Although not in the way of the in-game cutscenes strung together like Xenosaga did. That was painful to watch.

Do you see this type of camera movement in Alice in Wonderland? I think not.
Well I respect the fact you liked Spirit's Within, but I thought it was horrible. The characters were dull, the plot made no sense. I deffinitely wasted a few hours of my life watching it.
I've never seen advent children, so maybe it was better. It would be hard not to be.
Movie making is a whole different thing than video game making. It's not an easy leap to make, and I do believe if Square Enix is to have any success at it they would need to get some outside talent.
I'd pay to see it. I think FFXI's story is pretty cool. :)
I had actually debated animating a storyline, but man...animating takes forever, yo.
Maybe Zyeriis, but I doubt it - least from my perspective.
CGI may look cool, but they are still, in the end - just graphics to me. I think they have their place in movies, but not as main characters. They seem hollow and void of life to me. I've always felt it is very important to have something that is actually real if you want to portray real emotions, which is what makes any good movie good.
In Video Games you can get away with it because you are actually interacting in the story by role-playing as the main character. You are more involved so you will feel more like part of the story. In a movie you are just watching it, so it is very important to have good actors and actresses portraying realistic emotions to draw me in.
This is just my opinion though. There have been a lot of animated movies and cartoons that have done well at the box office, so it is possible to be successful doing it. I just won't be one of the ones buying the ticket.
Wasn't Advent Children based off Final Fantasy 7?
If so i'm going to have to disagree with you there. FF7 had a very cool story and interesting characters. It's only flaw was a lack of challenging gameplay.
As I said before, CGI can work on video games because you are actually intereacting in the storyline yourself - which helps bring the characters to life, so it works. With movies it's a bit different.
Final Fantasy 7 actually had a mentally unstable hero with multiple personality disorder. The villain was genetically altered from the cells of some alien that landed on earth. How can you say it was devoid of story and character lol
7 was some of Square's finest work as far as story telling goes. Easily.
Now if it wasn't, and advent children was based off some other game - then just ignore this post lol
i didnt like advent children story much, i just watched it for the CGI'z
I thought it had plenty of character development.
Cloud came to grips with his own grand dellusions about himself and accepted who he was.
Sephiroth learned he was not natural, went insane, and lashed out at the people who created him.
Cid learned what a prick he was being when confronted with the actual loss of the women who loved him.
I could go on forever.
I'm not good with roman numerals but i'm gonig to assume VIII = 8?
If so I agree, 8's plot was better, but not by much - and I disagree it was stretched too thin. I think it was delivered expertly with no major flaws. But just because I think 8's plot was better doesn't mean I can't appreciate 7's also. Both games had excellent story lines and characters.
OK back to 11 not 7 lol i just think id be cool most of the content is there from our story lines ha ha i thought it might be entertainning
FFXI would be a great movie . . . If Americans had nothing to do with it lmfao. And it would have to be all CG no bad actors please . . .
Sorry man, this is an MMO. Wouldnt feel right being a movie. The elements are to great to compress into a 2hour film. Although I might be interested ^^
Live actors only xD
george clooney could be cloud
jim carrey could be sephiroth
SE can make great stories and characters, and even more amazing visuals. now if they could string together a bunch of CGI cutscenes like in MGS then you got a pretty good movie in the works
