Come back next game day!! or Come back after japanese midnight!!!

Please for the love of god, get rid of these for quests, it's the most annoying thing ever!!!

Or at least have them a bit more consistent. I mean is it right that for someone who goes into a CS 30 seconds before someone else, has their affairs taken care of instantly, while someone else who starts that very same CS has to wait 24 hours? I mean in reality, if an airship takes time to get prepped, I understand, but the fact my airship takes 10 minutes, and my GF's takes a day because she was a few minutes slow on getting to places seems a bit weird to me.

Well to be fair its not all to bad these days by compare to before. I mean back when the missions were hard you could be doing the easier ones and come to a fight you had to wait weeks to do because you could not win solo, and needed friends or shout groups to help. Basically, even though this seems like an annoying break in the story and wait time, it is admittedly better than before, never the less I agree that these quest lines are annoying when they pull out a big wait time like that.

One recently that annoyed me greatly was with my 2nd character going to get an Ethereal Earring, I was on my way to finish the Bahamut fight quest and as I went, the conquest tally ended, which set me back an entire real life week because I was literally about 3 minutes to slow.

While a lot of these delays can be reduced or removed, there are some quests where the delay is reasonable- where the NPC clearly expects you to come back not right now but at some time in the future. In that regard it would be kind of silly if you could just stand there and talk to the NPC again immediately. Inconvinent as it may seem, in some cases it is used for effect. In other cases, it's used intentionally to control the speed at which certain things happen. In these cases you'll have to just suck it up and deal with it- it's a mechanism to keep you in the game longer. ToAU it was pretty heaivly abused though. I guess they didn't want everyone to be able to blow through all the missions in a day or two when they were brand new. But most of those waits could be cut out now.

The only waits I particularly hated were the "next conquest" waiting periods. This was particularly silly because depending on when you did the quest, you could either have to wait a week, or wait just one day. But some of these waits were removed not too long ago (e.g. for the upgrades from the AF/AF2 upgrade NPC), so it has gotten better.

Whitegate missions are like that because they ended at those points before the next update. There's more than enough to do in XI where a gameday or rl day wait shouldn't completely grind your gameplay to a halt.

If they want to do missions and can't because of a built-in delay then their gameplay is being ground to a halt. Gameplay isn't about what you CAN do, it's about what you WANT to do.

Waits like these are funny, the devs were scared that a bunch of people would finish the story and then quit but most of us have been here for 5+ years. Not because the content is hard or due to the clever system of delays built into mission storylines, but because we like the game and our friends. They need to keep that in mind when designing content, if it's designed to be fun then people will keep coming back regardless, no arbitrary waiting periods necessary.

While some waits are understandable, "japanese midnight" is a terrible mechanic. If you want something to take "a long time", make it solely based on ingame days, not some magical thing called JPM that doesn't actually exist within the game's world. Replace Japanese Midnight waits with 3-5 vanadiel days or something, depending on what it is you're waiting for. 3 days should be plenty to ready an airship. Worst case scenario for a JPM is like 25 vanadiel days. 25 days to prepare an airship? That's ridiculous. Alexander would have flattened all the middle nations in that time.

I know there's plenty to do in XI but the missions was what i wanted to do currently and hindering me from doing content i want to do just for the sake of it is not good no matter how you slice it. I can understand Limbus, Dynamis, etc...but MISSIONS!!!!? Come on!!

So the reason people say Metal Gear Solid series is more of a movie than game isn't because of the lack of elements to do (read: can do) that requires actually playing the game? Thanks for clearing that up, here I thought ever since I started gaming back in the 80s that gameplay referred to doing things with a character.

I don't recall the part in MGS where Campbell told me to halt the mission, hold my position, and call him back in 1 to 24 real life hours for further orders.

If I log in to FFXI wanting to play through missions and the game says "Nope, come back tomorrow" then my gameplay has been ground to a halt. You say that's acceptable because there are other things to do. I say it's not. If I wanted to do those other things at that time I'd be doing them.

Puppetmaster is a decent example as well with how fast experience is nowadays.

You can solo from level 1 past several of the puppetmaster "japanese midnight" blocks in one day, which are at 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 if you want all of the frames/heads (which a decent puppetmaster should). Back when PUP was newer, I leveled puppetmaster and this delay wasn't a big deal because of how much longer leveling took. Now, it's more noticeable.

The only other job that may have a time limit on big acquiring job specific stuff like this is summoner, due to fighting the Celestial avatars twice for Fenrir (which has a japanese midnight block, though you don't have to even unlock the job for it, or you can do it all before leveling).

The only other restrictions with jobs would be waits on things like artifact armor.

So yeah, an efficiently leveling puppetmaster has the same problem as someone trying to crank out the missions with artificial waits. I understand he has to make the puppet for you but it's not like just requiring zoning or something rather than japanese midnight is really that big of a deal.

I agree remove the 1-day wait from quests. I think its lazy programming if they wanted you to wait longer then they could just have the npc request an item that they know will take a while to get i.e. piece of omega's heart or anything else that drops of a nm.

Fetch quests are not a good way to fix this... its worse, just make it a game day if anything, those make much more sense than saying a real life period of time or putting more fetch quests into the game.

Hmmm, I might be more annoyed by the requirement of changing area to be able to repeat a quest. This holds especially true to the quests in Abyssea.

They did mention once that they are/were thinking of removing that (unsure if it meant quests in general or only those in Abyssea), but I have no idea what the status of that idea now is (or if it even exists any longer).

Also: Mission Progress: Wait until the next day (earth-time).

Agreed. Someone a few posts ago mentioned the wait timers are there to keep you in the game and subscribed longer, but nowadays there is enough content that they don't need to divide story sections with such ridiculous timers. 1-3 hours would be fine, but a full day? Sometimes the help you have is only available within the day, so it ends up being a longer wait if you need to shout for members once the timer ends. Thankfully depending on your job you can solo most of it, but a full day wait is still ridiculous.

Another day, another JM screwing me over. Today while doing ToAU I did Mission 24 Foiled Ambition and Mission 25 Playing the Part, which requires a game day and zoning for a CS which even when spamming enter, takes about 5 minutes. Following that I had to zone again, and wait for JM, lucky for me JM and the day changing landed at the exact same moment, so it was completely impossible for me to finish the quest involving the JM CS thanks to the game day CS. Due to being literally 7 minutes late for this, I now must wait a full 24 hours to continue a story I have already done on another character.

While I agree that a lot of the wait times should be cut down or eliminated, Why do you feel alternate characters, which are completely independent of each other, deserve to have special privileges, which is what you imply by adding "a story I have already done on another character." again, different characters are not connected, you don't get a free ticket out of XYZ content just because you've personally experienced it before.

I put that in there because I have experienced the story already once before, and know that the wait has no story significance, as such it makes it even worse that I must wait an entire day to continue because I was a few minutes late. If the wait were something story relevant which made sense, I may be more accepting, the same as if it were my first time doing it and I felt as though maybe I was waiting because something was coming, and I should be feeling anticipation. However neither of these are the case, its just a pointless cut off that has me waiting a day for no real reason except that back when it was added they cut off the missions at that point, and never went back to make it a game day or some such.

An example of when I would think its ok for this kind of thing.

Bad guy A is up to something, and the heroes know, however they are waiting for his next move as they have no idea where he is or what he is up to. This makes sense why you must wait, because you are waiting on the upcoming event involving the bad guy.

An example of something I do not find acceptable.

Story character has given you massive plot elements to move on in the story, however for some unknown and unexplained reason you are not allowed to continue forward with the story because the quest will not start.

The first has a legitimate reason for stopping you from continuing, as it is part of the plot, however the second is not because while your character is supposed to know info that allows you to continue, you are prevented by the game for unexplained reasons.

Most of those waits in the missions, the NPC tells you to come back later, or that he needs time to do X or whatever- there is a reasonable explanation for the forced wait. We still want them to go away of course.

In most cases I would probably convert JP midnight waits to game day waits, and game day waits to "zone and come back."

In this case Naja is mad at me, I already know that something is going on with the Black Coffin, and I know some info about it. Now if I were me, I would be looking for a way to make my lovely Mithra boss not decapitate me with her large spiky mace, in this case, looking for the Black Coffin and getting information about it. The last thing I would do is stand around doing nothing so that she can yell at me next time I walk into her office about how I have been doing nothing since my last assignment, and she can tell me how worthless I am. This is at least my out look on the CS I encountered today.
