Warning: Stay off Ob's lawn...

Hey guys,

I am going to be submitting a bug report on this, but I wanted to put out a warning to other PUP; just in case.

It was funny the first time it happened - but the novelty wore quickly...

Is it possible they made an overall adjustment to Cannibal Blade that may benefit us, but it screwed up something with OB?

I would normally say, how did something like this happen considering nothing they have done lately remotely ties into Ob and Cannibal Blade unless they directly buffed it without our knowledge.

Or this is more evidence of their pathetic code where they adjust how grass animates in Jugnar forest which caused Cannibal blade to be overpowered.

It's a good find indeed!

Yeah, when it happened last night, I saw that post (as I came running to see if it was a known issue) - but I posted a second bug report to corroborate the initial report's story. Never hurts to make sure the devs know that it is happening repeatedly.

My bug-report also mentions my awareness that it was previously reported.

My post here was for the PUP who don't wander over to the Bug forum. I wanted to save some poor soul from being turned inside out and Silence-of-the-Lambed like we were...

If I had to guess, which is worth next to nothing, I would say that they likely nudged Cannibal Blade in some way; forgetting that Ob has some kind of formula tacked on to his that makes him all Notorious Monstery - resulting in his damage formula running wild.

Either that, or they heard PUPs complaining about attachment drop rates and tweaked his drops, accidentally bumping a decimal point somewhere while they were in there with the screwdriver and hammer...

Yes, it definitely does not hurt, especially if you have additional information to report. ^^
I wish they didn't always lock the support/bug-report threads after reading them...

It's been like that for a while, seen up to 24k Cannibal Blades. He misses like hell, in the end I usually tanked him making him swap to Stormwaker.

Hmmm. Perhaps there is a situational trigger, or something. I fight Ob a lot and I have never encountered this, previously; fighting mutliple times a week, for a few months, always with the "make him a PLD" strategy. Not saying that he has not done it before, as obviously any individual's experience is a limited sample - but this was completely new to our little duo.

Regardless, SE has now indicated that it is not working as intended - so hopefully sometime soon it will return to normal.

Also, I noticed that every time I have witnessed this problem, the damage has ended in a zero. I am now wondering if somehow there is a "decimal out of place" - as if his damage is calculated normally to be 1915 or something, but what hits the player is multiplied by 10 because of the error. My sampling is incredibly small, but even so it seems odd that I have never seen a damage that ends in a number other than zero.

Sweet... baby jesus... Not much to contribute but I think the "Mother of god" picture would fit perfectly here.

That's pretty crazy. A work around would be to bring a bunch of ranged DD or mages and just lock it in sharpshot/stormwaker mode.

What's "a lot" to you?
Over the last month I fought him 25 times and it always happened whenever we were making him go in Valoredge mode.
It's not related to the % of his HP as I first thought, it happens even at high %.
You may wonder "why the hell fighting valoredge?!" the answer is simple: so that the fight lasts longer, so that TH goes up more :D

Cannibal Blade misses 9/10 anyway lol, it's not a bg deal. Generally we had at least 3 people during my runs. Me on PUP/NIN, a WHM and a THF/NIN. We still did Valoredge mostly. If the THF died (most of the times he was avoiding Cannibal Blade, and it's not like Ob always uses that move only) I tanked him for a bit swapping to Stormwaker.

I fought Ob several other times in the past, but we're talking about level 75 here, and back then we weren't even daring to face-2-face tank him, we were just kiting him around the zone while in Stormwaker form.


Anyway I never meant to say this was "working as intended", it's pretty clear there was something wrong, just wanted to say that it has been this way for more than a month, probably even more :)

If this affected player automatons, it would have been fixed bef

Also, in the same post was a concession that my experience, statistically, is a limited sample size. To spell it out as specifically as I can from memory: 2-3 fights, roughly twice a week (sometimes more, sometimes less), for 2-3 months.

If we were to take a very raw average of that: two fights, twice a week, for two months = 24 fights. This seems low for the actual number of fights I have done, but it is a good "best fit" number for the purposes of conversation. That said, what is "a lot" has nothing to do with personal perspective, and more to do with comparison to the average. I have fought it less than you, at least in the last month it seems; but if most others have only gone out a handful of times at all, then both of our experiences are "a lot" of fights.

Back to the point, though: Every single fight was done with a swift change to Valoredge (where he was kept for the entirety of the fight, with the exception of the last fight on the night in question). Instances of Cannibal Blade dealing abnormal damage: 0% previous to the night referenced in the OP. 100% the night referenced in the OP. I have seen Cannibal Blade in nearly every fight, but the damage did not seem out of the ordinary until the night in question - which is why I wonder if there is a situational trigger causing the error. I did not pay attention to the in game day, that night, for instance. Maybe on Darksday it goes nuts because the error has to do with the interaction between the Cannibal Blade formula and the elemental bonus from the day? Just a thought to illustrate what I meant by the trigger comment.

Again, I never stated that you were wrong in stating that it had been happening previously; just that my experience with the NM is routine enough to be significant and I had not encountered it previously.

While I will agree that it is not a deal breaker on hunting the NM, it is certainly something worth mention for individuals who are new to farming attachments, or who have not returned to face him in quite some time. This is the purpose for the initial post - just a warning to the green and rusty.

Also, for the record, none of this is intended as combative if it seems as such - I am merely engaging in discussion, and I tend to be verbose and cold sounding. I wanted to clarify because I know text does not convey tone well, and I want to be clear that I am not attacking you, Zhronne.

I dunno what to say. In my limited experience (25ish fights) the few times someone got hit by Cannibal Blade (can't really remember how many times it happened, 10 at best?) it always did big damage. ~20k.
I've never seen it do "normal" damage, altough it was missing so much the sample is probably too small to tell.

Stupid Ob.

I had this happen to me too, but just kept shadows up and it got absorbed every time. Strangely enough I got my percolator when this happened.

I might be wrong but I thought Cannibal Blade went through shadows? Magic Mortar definitely does. It just misses a lot on lv95 characters, especially jobs with high eva.

CB's always acted like spirits within without losing it's physical/slashing damage. No miss No Enmity, Ignores shadows, No resists unless the mob is a whore, damage goes up with TP/melee skill, but the difference between 100 and 300 TP is always fairly meh (less than double, so for 3x the TP you get like, 1.5 cannibal blades, but it's early and I'm totally fudging those numbers from memory). That you evade Ob's cannibal blade is what bothers me O.o

Ob's Cannibal Blade is quite likely under different rules from Players' Canibal Blade.
It can definitely miss, it does so most of the times on level 95 characters actually ^^'

Why change this.. don't fight it in Valor Edge mode then, The end. There's really no need to Fix that cannibal blade at all. Why does SE have to FIX that when you can fix it yourself, ob will never pop in Valoredge without a pup, and on top of that ppl are smart.. write it on wiki the end?

It is certainly avoidable, so it shouldn't be top priority or anything - but if it is not working as intended, it should be addressed. What if it was learned that Cooldown was accidentally adding burden/overdrive instead of removing it? Would the fact that we can avoid needing it through careful use of Maneuvers excuse the need to correct it? An imperfect analogy, but it is functional.

While myself and another did report it as a bug, the purpose of this thread was just a warning to the unfamiliar - if you are not concerned about it, go ahead and disregard.

It definitely does not seem normal, nor intended. I don't know why anyone would actually be against it getting 'fixed'. Why not change it since it's likely non-intended? I don't think there ever was a point in this discussion that was about whether it should be changed, as if it was an intended feature.

As Annahya said, this is not to make a change happen, but to let people know.

Honestly, I have not been back yet. All I need from him now is a Disruptor, and some other projects have come to the fore.

I would be interested to know, as well, if others have noticed any changes.

This is a good thing in my opinion. Shadow tanking it makes his Cannibal Blade no threat to you (I've never been hit with it while shadows were up and I've never seen it miss with them down). The reason I say it's a good thing is because it gives you more opportunities to proc TH. Tank with a PUP/NIN, feed Ob TP, Ventriloquy to your Automaton when Ob is at low HP. Repeat until bored or TH is maxed.

Apparently, Ob is still doing the most devastating attack in the game... strips my last shadow, and as I'm recasting, BAM Cannibal Blade... 21000 damage...

Yep, noticed the fixed issue as well. Shame I only need a Galvanizer now, since I got a Disruptor just the day before. (Almost crapped my pants when Ob's double-attack let him strip BOTH my 2 remaining shadows, but thankfully no WS followed before Ni landed.)
