Unlinking Account from Token

My understanding after reading through SE Support Center forums etc, the only way to unlink an account from a token is to deactivate the token... from the original launch of the security token, things have changed. So could someone please clarify this for me:

We have 2 accts hooked up on 1 token. We are now no longer unable to unlink accts, and the only way we can do so is by completely cancelling off the token. In turn, we now have to purhase a new token for the acct as they are no use once de-activated, and the mog satchel attached will no longer be accessable???? Can the 2 accts be seperated onto 2 seperate tokens then as well???? we took over a friend's account when he quit 3 years ago before the tokens came along, and now he wants to come back so we want to give him his original toon back vs him having to start from scratch.

I don't really understand this post because its a big run-on. However, I can tell you that removing the security token from a FFXI account disables that security token permanently. There is absolutely nothing SE support or anyone else can do to activate that security token again.

In other words, once you unlink the security token from an account, put it in the trash. If you want a new token, buy one. SE does not state this clearly (in my opinion), which is their bad.

Basically, their friend quit FFXI and they took over the account. When the security tokens came out they created a SE account. They linked their FFXI account and the friend's FFXI account they took over to the same SE account and added a security token. The friend now wants to come back to FFXI and they are trying to figure out what to do. They are asking two questions:

1. Do you lose access to your Mog Satchel if you remove your security token?

No. All existing characters with a Mog Satchel will still have access to it and it can continue to be expanded up to 80 spaces after you remove the security token

2. Can you add a second security token to an SE account and use one token on one FFXI account and the other token on the other FFXI account?

I don't know, but i would guess at no.

No a token can only be linked to one SE account, and while your SE account becomes permanently linked to your FFXI account you can discontinue the use of the Token at any time. However, after the battery dies or you chose to discontinue the use of the token the old token becomes useless and you have to purchase a new one in order to use the tokens service once more.

to further clarify, there are 2 IDs attached to one token now so can those 2 be split apart even if one isn't linked to a token again

There can only be one active token per SE account, and POL accounts cannot be unlinked from SE accounts. You don't lose access to the satchel when the token is removed, just any new characters won't be made with the satchel aftert the token is disabled. The rule is one person per POL and SE account, you're not supposed to share, and the token is to enforce this.

Under the terms of service, he wasn't even allowed to transfer his account to you when he quit. They could ban his account for that.

You permanently linked those PlayOnline IDs to that SquareEnix Account when you linked them. They can never be split up. As the tokens each use a unique pattern to generate passwords, only one token can be linked at a time, to generate valid one-time-passwords for the account.

If you unlink the token and they see multiple logins from physically different locations, the new security measures can lock the SquareEnix Account until a support call is made. They are better enforcing their rules of not allowing multiple people to share an account.

I didn't have to permanently deactivate the security token to disable it's use. A few years ago I called Square-Enix customer support and explained that I would like my security token disabled, but not deactivated "in case I ever decide to use it again." and so they did. Since then I was able to enable the use of my security token just a few months ago, but only on the Square-Enix website. I have never tried to reactive it's use for the game, but the point is that it is possible to deactivate the token without making it useless. Also, each new character created after disabling the token in this way does have access to a satchel, unlike if you removed a token.

While it is against the TOS to transfer an account, I really think it depends on the situation. I know that allot of couples who live together and dual box with each other's characters when they are not playing it. If it's sharing access, but not a clear transference, they might be lenient. Similarly, imagine if a couple maintains two separate characters, but one combined square-enix account and then get a divorce. I imagine there must be a way to ensure access to accounts separately, though it's not something that could be done without a call to customer service.

Now that billing is done through the Square-Enix account alone your real problem is that even if you disable the security token your friend wouldn't be able to directly pay for services. In theory you could restore their access without contacting customer support if you simply deactivate the token as others have suggested (with the understanding that neither account will probably ever get to use one) and pay for your friend.
