Synthesis & Synergy

Howdy,

I'm writing as a recently-turned level 100 Cook. One of the aspects of FFXI that has kept me playing (or returning) over six years has been synthesis. I love the variation, the harvesting crystals, the crafts and sub-craft, the guild points -- it's a really fun part of Vana'diel.

In my opinion -- not the susbstance of this post -- synergy is broken. If we were supposed to have "multi-player crafting," then synergy wouldn't have been a skill unto itself, and we could've gathered crafters of different guilds around furnaces without needing to worry about it. Now, there are plenty of recipes that require synergy and just one other skill (or very low levels of other skills), essentially making synergy a one-man activity. Which kinda defeats the purpose. Broken, broken.

But, my question, or suggestion, is: will we be getting any new synthesis recipes? Or is it all just synergy from here on out? It seems with each new update, new "synthesis and synergy" recipes are promised, and then only synergy recipes are announced. Even when sometimes some synthesis recipes are snuck in, the ratio of new synthesis to new synergy is awfully skewed. Has synthesis run its course? Would it be possible to resurrect it?

crafting overhaul [I'm Interested]

For once I'd love to see the recipe list on update day not have 30 something leatherworking/smithing/goldsmithing synths, with 1-2 for alchemy/cooking.

Anyway, synergy is a bit more difficult than just looking at the skill requirements. When recipes start needing over 80 combined elemental energies, soloing them becomes very difficult since taking the time to manage pressure and clearing impurities to avoid overloads/leaks means time spent not feeding more fewell while the furnace's HP depletes. This gets even more agitating on synths where you have to feed fewell in a specific order to avoid depleting another needed pool for success.

Convert all synthesis recipes to synergy recipes.

Random breaks and loss of mats are the stuff of old wives tales.

Can you make a galley kitchen solo? I can't. There are several synergies that require two or more high level skills, and even if they didn't the difficulty of the synergy attempt itself sometimes requires or greatly benefits from having more people.

It's not broken.

It took 2 hours one night to synergy 5 galley kitchens.

Would have beeen 5 minutes if it had been a synthesis recipe.
