Can I get my old character back

I quit playing FFXI around 2 years ago. Decided to come back and when I reinstalled my game my mule was there, but not my main character. I was wondering if there was anyway to get it back. I tried the character reactivation page on playonline, but been getting maintiance message for like two days now. Would be grateful for any help.

It's been down for months now sadly.. I just came on the forums to see any change in it.
