On the current path (maintaining ps2 support): FFXI is doomed to die due to lack of expansion, especially with the aforementioned dwindling of players. At least with dropping it there is some hope. This is in no way an assumption.

I'm afraid that the extinction of the PS2 is inevitable.../sob... I tried XB360 and I hated it. couldn't get the PS3s to load POL so I'm saving my pennies to pickup a couple of PCs. Until they die, I'm PS2ing it lol
Everything dies. And, this may very well be S/E's business plan for FFXI. They may not want to make a significant investment in a game unless there is a high chance of a significant return. They already pulled a large number of the team from FFXI. They may have moved some back. But, I wouldn't hitch my financial star on an aging game.
FFXI is going to die with or with out PS2 supported.

for those that asked for a link to a PC under $100 that will run ffxi. There you go.
PS2 is the toe tag, a cancer that is slowly eating away at the game, but there is hope. This malignant tumor is easily removed through modern science leaving room to heal and even promote new growth. We need not simply lie back and accept our fate. We can fight this. Together we are stronger then this malady, this affliction that has befallen what we all hold dear. Together. We can all see a brighter tomorrow.
Edit: So changing my sig. lol
That...was a bit far. Disapprove.
thats a bit overboard dude....
Was away for a while due to some RL needs, but in response to this--NO.
An old Pentium system with a 2MB vid card can run XP as a print server if you wanted it to--had a client that was doing this until the system died and then we switched to an old P2 system that was gathering dust (which is what I had at the time... with an 8MB Nvidia Vid card). So, yes, I had to upgrade my hardware so my operating environment would run the new game I wanted to play.
If you go look at the POL site, in order to run the newest releases of the game (from 2008 UC on) you are REQUIRED to have a DVD-ROM to install the game. If you happen to be running an older system that still doesn't have a DVD-ROM---guess what, you gotta fork out $25 or more for a new drive just to install it.
You missed the entire point of that post--hardware/software requirements eventually get superceded as newer versions of software are released. It's a fact of life that has been accepted by all but a small minority of this playerbase.
seriously?
WOW just can not believe I read that. I hope you get banned or at least a suspension for this.

i actually wish i could find a WoTG disc for my old ps2 so i can 2 box again >.> sense my pc took a dump, i been playin on xbox now :/ 2 boxin was fun and less stressfull to get some things done yourself, (thf/nin and a whm or rdm char on other acct) made it fun for me any, and was a good way to low man stuff with friends.
quick question tho. my 2nd acct has all xpacks etc..tied to it, even if my ps2 dont have WoTG installed could i still enter Abyssea areas on it?
people seem to forget htat FFXI was made for the PS2 in the first place, and was PORTED to the PC and 360.
As much as I would love to have an upgraded FFXI (not FFXIV to be honest) this game is a PS2 MMORPG, and will most likely stay that way.
Dropping PS2 support will NOT lead to the PC/Xbox 360 game clients being enhanced/expanded/replaced. It will not lead to the production of a true PS3 version. All it will do is end PS2 support. That's it.
Nice to hear someone say it proper (as I have 100 times). The game was made for PS2 & then PC/360 were fortunate enough to get it.
A company can not just abandon the system that made them who they are in the MMORPG industry. This is the reason for FFXIV. Enhanced graphic, smoother game play, UI, everything. They just failed with it & have a lot of work to make it the game it will become.
You can build a PC that will run FFXI for about 100-200 dollars. if you go to certain bargain sites like pricewatch, you could probably find an older PC that will suit your FFXI needs. Still, assembling a computer is relatively easy, and you can optimize your performance/dollar by putting one together yourself.
wow did i have a god of ffxi ps2 ive had maybe 3-5 freezes in the years i plaied 7 btw so i have no idea what ur talking about i 2 box on ps2 and laptop so no cluwe what ur probles are
but... it could elminate all the "ps2 limitations" as the default response to things like blinking on gear swap (PS2 Memeory Limit), new zones and or ones with better quality textures (Memory and/or HD limits), storage limits on things like inventory inventory and KI lists. Unless the limitations are also inbedded in the emulation engine as well, those limitations would no longer exist--and if they are, then they would have the option to remedy that if they so chose, but they could no longer use the PS2 as the main excuse for some of these changes and would have to justify not doing them for some other reason.

I bought a LAPTOP off Ebay 2 YEARS ago that exceeds those specs for only $280 +$35 shipping. I See NEW PC's that FAR exceed those specs all the time for around $200 online, $300 locally. I probly have enough spare parts laying around to make one already:
P35 Mboard... check
Core2 Duo 3GHZ CPU...check
40 GB HD... check
ATI X1900 vid card... check
4GB DDR2 RAM... check
old beat up case with 650W ATX PSU... check
15" monitor... check
PS2 mouse check
Pioneer DVD-R Burner... Check
Floppy disk drive (don't really need... but... check)
PCI XiFi soundcard if I don't like onboard audio... check
Windows 98 SE and Windows XP Upgrade Disk--scored a 2 for one deal years ago when I got mine, never used other one, so....Check
Ethernet cable--several ranging from 3-12 feet in length, or I can use USB wifi adaptor I used to use for laptop years ago--check.
hmmm... the only thing I'm lacking is a keyboard... $10 at Big lots down the street... check.
UC can be downloaded for $10, then $30 for abyssea add-ons
soooo... that would cost me $50 to put another box online
I just might have to let my daughter play FFXI one day after all.....
lol yeah it is pretty easy to get a PC to play it on. bet it would look good on my Mac (but I hate playing games on PC). I am a console player all the way, PC is for surfing the net & trolling forums O.o
I did not just say that did I? Crap why would I admit that to everyone?
Well time to spend the night with my Wife. Thanks for all your help/information Raist.
can't post a link to it, but 3BTech had this deal in an email I got on 3/19:
• ATI 128MB w/ Dual Monitor Support
• Intel Pentium 4 3.0GHz
• 1GB DDR2, 80GB SATA hard drive
• Windows XP Professional
Only $129.99
All it's lacking is monitor/kbd/mouse/speakers, which (aside from monitor)most of those can be found cheap just about anywhere--but you could probly run it to an LCD TV (if you have one) via DVI/HDMI converter (some even have standard VGA input as well, so just need a cheap VGA cable).
and if you don't like using mouse/kbd--a usb converter to connect PS2/XB/GC controllers run $10 or less--think even Walmart is still carrying the one I bought. If not, the logitech clones of the PS2 run $20 or less just about everywhere.
nice haha i've always played it on Xbox till i quit for RL reasons..but im returning now when it comes online lol...and thats nice sadly i dont know how to put together a PC :P but i know a few people willing to if i wanted but i got a nice laptop atm :) so im set i could 2 box if i wanted to but oh well..
