Smoked this fight with a PLD/WAR MNK/NIN BLU/NIN RDM/SCH WHM/BLM and NIN/DNC. Was pretty much cake once you realize that if you're dding and pulling hate off the PLD then you're gonna get raped.

Even Monk burn isn't guaranteed. Setup 4 Monks (2 99s a linkshell member and myself and 2 95s) SMN with PD and RDM (wife who needs). 0/2 on this setup...it seems his defense/attack power varies from BCNM to BCNM.
Replace one of the Monks with a BRD, and You'll win pretty easily.
Have SMN use Ifrit's Enfire
BRD Soul Voice March or Minuet (if they're using Hundred Fists, Then Minuet)
SMN then uses PD > Everyone rape
The enfire really is the key, nearly doubles your damage because of his per hit cap.. My group was pretty meh, But we won by the skin of our teeth. Zerging is a bit difficult, But it doesn't even require MNKs.
WAR with Ridill/Joy/Axe/etc Would work, Even M.Sword
DRG or SAM with a Quint Spear
DRK with Bahamut's Zagnel
So even two handed jobs have the opportunity to be useful, Especially if you can get a BRD for Soul Voice March. MNK, THF, Etc work wonders cause they have all 1 handed weapons with high skill in them, So they don't need much maint.
I mean, the fight is a little rough, But i think everyone has a chance to win, Pretty much any jobs can work so long as they aren't DERPBROS. Even PLD/NIN can work in the Zerg, Dual Wield/etc. Use Vorpal Blade, Joyeuse Offhand.
Even if you dont use perfect defense for some reason, a summoner with Inferno Howl will DRASTICALLY increase your party's damage output due to the damage cap.
I think the problem with fights like these is that it forces people to play jobs they may have leveled but not have the best gear for or skills.
Thf is my main, i have capped skills and good gear, i got lucky i got to go as thf and we kicked butt, however if i was told we already have a thf what else do you have and i had to go war or drk or bst then my damage would have been like half what my thf can pump out.
To sum up if you can't do this with your main job your prob not going to win
if you don't know about a 6-man-setup for a difficult fight then you obviously still need to learn a lot.
This Fight is a challenge, but not broken hard. Pick your jobs that you need and figure out a strategy.
So much crying
1/2 on the fight went 6x bst/nin
We set our pets on to it and then kited it around when it 2hr.
After that we all ganged up on it pets and master a like.
Dawn masulim is a must for bst in this set up.
Would not want to do that fight again, for no one, its a royle pain in the butt.
He's talking about back in 2001-05 when it took more the a month to reach 75. Most people back then had capped magic and played a lot better then the ff XI crew of today. I fought rdm maat like 20 times at least before I gave up. I asked ls mates who had beat rdm maat to beat him for me and they wouldn't do it. Now you can say I suck all you want but if the fight wasn't to hard then SE wouldn't have nerfed him.
If you had 4 monks with perfect defense and lost you guys did it wrong. I went 0-4 with random setups last night. We then switched to 3 monks 2 smn and whm. Went in got enfire buffs from fenrir all monks engaged smn PD we all 2 hour within mind he's dead. The only problem with this fight for your standard party setup is the time limit.
Just logged in to check our server: 2867 people on line.... 1301 on jobs level 96-99, 688 of those are already level 99.
That's not accounting for people like myself and 2 othe friends that got the win last night on jobs that were level 91-93 and haven't even hit 96-99 yet.
And no.. we didn't MNK or SMN or BLM burn it. We didn't use 2 hours. The only "exceptional" thing we did was the old sleep-pots/op neck for TP before the fight thing and had a really good PLD tank. All else was just a standard COP crag fight sort of strategy with the olde rarerab tail. 1/1 on win for us... 6:47. Not a spectacular win time, but was a straightforward fight for us.
Really people....making this harder than it needs to be.
Oh, and our party that went 1/1 last night was SCH, BST, THF, DRK, MNK, PLD (half were 91-93)... and no one used their 2-hours.
Suffering through Maat back in the day should have hardened your skin for something like this.
Rdm maat was the only one that was a that hard. I went 1/1 on drg in late 2005 my rdm friend went 1/9 the same month I got my win. Any DD job was not that hard, whm easy, pld easy, thf easy to annoying if you tried just stealing. My "slow" friend went 1/2 on mnk only cause he timed out Buffing, yeah thats right he spent the whole time at the start buffing didn't even hit maat.
I really can't call a fight you can win using multiple strategies as hard.
I seriously think you have to fall asleep or fulltime pink or something to lose multiple times to this.
This fight was pretty easy:
2x RDM/SCH (gimp skillz since we don't use it, ever)
1x BLM/RDM
1x BLU/RDM
RDM: sabateur bio III and poison II
Olde Rarab Tail
RDM: Chainspell nuke, convert, nuke
BLM: Bewm
BLU: Azure Lore skillchain
Won without running out of mp, although we did all convert once aside from the BLU.
No, We just weren't stupid enough to rip hate off the tank when we did it. Good Teamwork and being patient is what made the win for us.
Oh and the PLD who tanked for us had a 95 Aegis along with a full -38% PDT in gear on. He pretty much wore straight up turtle-tanking gear instead of thinking that he was gonna be able to eat anything he threw.
RDM/SCH threw up Stoneskin AoE on us, BLU kept headbutting him during his two hour and the WHM constantly kept Barfira up along with Regen on our tank that it was probably the smoothest 1st time BC fight I'd done in a long time.
The more I thought about this fight, I could probably do it on my PLD as well and I don't have an Ochain or an Aegis. If people are pissing & crying this hard over this then please by all means keep crying or as some people have said already.... suck less. :|
PD zerg is no different then a item fight. In fact the it let you fight it with all mage or just what ever you have on hand which is great. Still was fun nuking a little taru down into the ground while he runs around reminds me of the orc tower or dyna sandy.
It's not about sucking, the Taru is cheap. He can at any point in time just kill someone, PLD tanks included. The chances of him just killing you go up the lower his HP is. If you had a PLD tank and he survived the fight, doesn't mean that everyone else sucks, only that your rolled well on your dice. The Taru didn't decide to do three to four WS's within the span of five to six seconds. When I did mine it was MNK MNK BLU (me) THF WHM SMN. We Crimson Howl + PD and ran in and 2hr'd him. Got him to under 30% when PD wore and within seconds both me and the THF were dead. I went from 100% HP with shadows up to dead before I could blink, didn't even have time to hit my Flashga macro. Not only that, but the THF also died during that time, it was so fast that it took me a second to register that it even happened. Thankfully we had read stories about him doing that and had an emergency plan that we immediately put into practice. WHM tossed his tail out the moment someone hit 0 HP. I RR'd and hit him with stuns or regurgitation while the 2 MNK's kept hitting him. He was down to less then 15% when the first tail wore and I immediately used mine (as we planned). he got one Ws off before he was running again. We killed him shortly thereafter.
So 1/1, does that mean we "kick ass" and everyone else needs to "suck less", absolutely not. It means we went in with plan A to zerg it but also had backup plan. Three of our members brought tails, just in case. I had set the required spells so that I could delay him while he zigzags all over the place. I even had a contingency plan to kite his a$$ around in circles should the situation get dire enough.
My only advice is to bring 3 tails. You may not need all three, you may not even need one, but should he decide to go cheap and start instantly killing people, you will be glad you brought them.
1/1 died in 1 min 10 seconds of fighting after using PD same strat...
We had a brd mule though, but he gave attack songs for the mnks and I was the only one with marches.
mnk/mnk/blu/brd/smn/whm (brd and whm were mules).
I haven't been reading this thread but I figured I'd drop in to tell you my setup.
I've won this fight twice with this setup:
PLD > WHM (me) > BLU > THF > BLM > BLM
and the 2nd time we replaced blm with a drg that needed help.
First time the PLD used his Ochain and 2nd time I asked him to try w/o it to see if it made or break (since I've been hearing that was the only way to win this fight) and it went just as well.
The PLD's HP went up and down quite a bit but if your WHM is paying attention and on top of things I think it isn't too bad. I personally subbed RDM because I felt that I would need the extra MP pool and it did help a lot.
Really no huge strategy besides go in, fight, and keep the tank alive. Also the BLM's nukes didn't do much at all.

Personally I think Perfect Defense should of been deactivated for this fight. I said it after they announced it being a battle and still stand by what I said. I think it's very broken and a very cheap way to defeat your enemy, but that's just me.
I understand others might have to end up relying on such strategy to win and that's okay with me, I have no issue with that. I am simply stating my opinion on what I think about PD is all.
I read "Take it slow, don't be braindead fight isn't that hard"
Perfect Defense only works well if your summoner has summon magic high enough - low magic seems not working well since the taru would tear the DD apart. Your DD also need weapon skills over 320 ish or they would not be able to deal enough damage in 90 seconds and will get murdered one by one. Enfire is the key - so rdm, sch or summoner need to have their respective magic skills high enough to deal good damage.
A lot of strategies works - but you have to bring a minimum of 4 competent players and 2 casual corners. 6 casual corners will have tough time with this bcnm. Even the beastmaster x 6 is not guaranteed if your beastmasters just leveled the job last weekend or barely have enough gears (and not full merit the job). Participants need to bring food, meds, and in some cases "rarab tails" item. This bcnm can be cakewalk or frustrating one. If you used up all your 2 hours and need to recharge - just bring your party to aby and get ISL or if you happen to have revitalizer in aby, now it is the time to use it.
Perfect Defense isn't affected by summoning skill...
Howl is though.
Overall the common strategies are:
- bring 6 tails, use them one by one and mana burn this.
- bring a job that can do damage mitigation and give you enfire (summoner works with high summon magic)
- bring 4 monks and smn and sch (only works if the players have high weapon skills, summon magic, and enhancing)
- 6 beastmaster with 5-10 dawn muslums for each of the beastmaster
- bring normal party set up of players with competent skills and pld with Aegis and a couple tails for emergency
- multi hits weapon skills works the best, jobs dual wield with low delay weapons + enfire
- bring 6 summoner with Ifrit, Titan, Ramuh (titan to earthen ward, ifrit + ramuh for enspells and stun) and a couple tails
- above all, need competent players who at least understand their jobs (merited the jobs) and have good gears.
Can't really say I found him seeing as I'd known that Aegis PLD since 2004. I tried it again without him and did it on my own PLD. Just came in wearing full -PDT gear and turtle tanked that taru like a pro. Point hasn't changed no matter who has what gear. Don't try and be stupid and use your head instead of thinking that you can just either run in and zerg it or halfass it. It's the final limit break fight so of course it's going to be a challange. He's an easy fight if you do it right which people have explained to you in this thread not once but multiple times.
P.S. I was one of the 1st NA RDMs on Fairy to beat Maat on RDM. It took me two tries to do it.
Suck Less.
Man if people are still having issues with this fight imagine how much crying is gonna happen when they try to get into an exp pt in Abyssea and have to run all over to out claim the other 150 people in the zones... I'm still waiting for the "Abyssea is too crowded after updates" thread... >.>
Okay so I had to do this fight twice.(for my alternate to) Went in with MNK, SAM, WHM, NIN, BST, RDM. Really didn't stand a chance. Wipped before 50% I was hesitant to go in again but someone left. Now I could blame the RDM who wasn't healing but I won't cause I figured we wouldn't win anyway especially after I saw 2 people basically get one shotted. Now lets remember I do these fights with no weakened items. So we did a little change up. MNK leaves so had other 2 switch to BST. So now we have 3 BST, WHM, SAM, and a nice Aegis PLD that decided to just help us out. We win no problem. Why? because the PLD never went below 800 hp. I still think this fight is too hard for your average FF XI player.
No, they're just bad at the game. It's not the lack of uber gear, it's the lack of knowing how to properly use what they do have available to them. Odds are good that any randomly selected FFXI player won't even know what a PDT or MDT set is, much less actually bother to maintain one. Hell, odds are good that any randomly selected FFXI player won't even bother to swap gear.
There are lots of people who play FFXI who are simply not very good at it.
