Your phone uses a rechargable battery, the token does not. The two are not comparable.
What phone has a rechargeable battery that konks out after 1 year?
Anyway, you have to disable the token on your account regardless of if you're getting a new one or not to continue being able to log in, so why not just go without a token if $10 is too much for you?

It never ceases to amaze me that anyone would expect an electronic device that they own would last for ever. Nor that anyone would expect someone else to be responsible for the replacement cost. You knew when you purchased the security token that you would have to purchase replacement. Or at least you would have if you'd read what the screen before clicking the "I agree" button.
