I have always loved merits, and now job points. I think that the combination of job points and gifts is severely underestimated. As far as I'm concerned 550 job points is equivalent to adding a second piece of body armor with full 119 stats and 1 to 6 incredible spells (black mage tier 6 comes to mind). I don't think people realize gifts are cumulative and don't overwrite themselves.
Some jobs don't get as much out of their job points as others do. For example while blm got 6 new spells for 100 job points, thf got a tier of treasure hunter they can't reach.
edit: I do however like job points as a system. I actually like job point farming. I'm just not a fan of thf's categories, and gifts.
